Nicholas Serafini passed away on January 29 at Gilchrist Hospice at the age of 93 with his wife by his side. He was born in Palmoli, Italy and was the youngest of nine children all of whom preceded him in death.
He served in the Italian Military after World War 2 and was stationed in Milan. He learned to repair trucks and heavy machinery during his military service and while driving a truck to and from Naples. He briefly owned a car/truck repair garage in Vasto, Italy with his brothers.
He married his wife Maria Pia in 1955 and shortly thereafter moved to Baltimore, where he started his career as a Deisel Mechanic at Marocco Construction company which was in Little Italy at the time. The company moved to Towson where it remains. He assisted the company to install underground utility infrastructure (gas, electric, water, sewage) throughout the Baltimore region.
As he aged he developed macular degeneration and lost his ability to see clearly and could no longer drive. Nick was not a man who would remain still. He cultivated a garden each summer and enjoyed growing and sharing several varieties of figs. He never read, yet in retirement grew a passion for literature and would listen to 2-3 recorded books per week from the local library. In 2000, he began his next career as a volunteer at University Of Maryland St Joseph Medical Center. He delivered much needed supplies to the inpatient units with his volunteer partner Bill Kelleher, both volunteered into their 90s. He retired from volunteering in April 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. He is survived by his wife and two children Nicholas Serafini Jr and Grace Serafini , many nieces and nephews in Italy and five grandchildren (Amanda, Andrew, Paul, Kate, and Cori) of his own as well as several people who have adopted him as grandfather through the years. He also has one great grandchild (Rocco). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Baltimore County Public Library or UM St. Joseph Medical Center.
