

Janet Cecilia Melson Librarian, World War II Veteran 18 January 1921~19 July 2009 Daughter of Donald W. and Jenny C. McLean, Janet C. Melson was a native of California and resident of Marin County. She graduated from the University of California Berkeley and worked as a librarian for Dominican College, the Commonwealth Club, and retired from the Marin County Free Library system. She served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. She enjoyed cooking and gardening and felt "we are all wanted and needed." She was active in numerous fraternal and civic organizations including the American Association of University Women, American Legion, 4-H Club, Golden Gate Glass Club, Our Lady of Loretto Parish, St. Vincent de Paul Young Ladies Institute, and the Tuesday Hikers Club. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, William H. Melson and five of their six children with their families: Charles and Janet Melson, Donald and Catherine Melson, Gabrielle and John Kosterman, Elisa and John Cronin, and Kristen Melson. There are 13 grand and great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are with Keaton's of Novato. There will be a funeral Mass at Our Lady of Loretto Church at 10:30 in the Morning on Friday, 24 July. Interment will be private at the Golden Gate National Cemetery. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Friends of the Novato Libraries, 1720 Novato Boulevard, Novato, California 94947.
