Evangeline A. Tabayoyong

Gel, to friends and family, was born February 2, 1932 in Ilagan, Isabela, Philippines to the late Tomas and Mauricia (née Libunao) Altamero. She grew up in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya. Gel met her husband in 1953, the late Wesley T. Tabayoyong, M.D., with whom she would share 50 happy years until his death on November 16, 2003. They loved welcoming guests into their home to worship, make music, and share feasts. Gel’s cooking was legendary. Her natural gift for languages, made her a valuable interpreter. She was outgoing and made friends easily. She was highly intelligent, finishing her nursing boards at 4th overall, and once was presented a scholastic award by 1st Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Wesley and Gel ran a family medical clinic for many years. Their patients spanned many generations. As a nurse, Gel cared for countless babies, with gentle, loving expertise, her favorite being newborns.

Evangeline poured her heart into raising her children, Jo-Jo (Steven) Murphy, Wesley, Hazel (Tom Biagi), and Walter. She is also survived by her granddaughter Aubrey (Michael) Fitzner.

She had a deep and unwavering Christian faith, was a dedicated nurse, and had a strong devotion to her family! Her children and granddaughter were her pride and joy. She had a powerful soprano voice that choirs depended on to hit the high notes.

She is preceded in death by her siblings, Esther, Ruth, Tomasa, Paul, Ernest, George, Edwin, and José. She is survived by her brother, Tomas Altamero, Jr. Gel is a fond aunt of many and dear friend to all.

The visitation will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023 from 4 - 8 p.m. at Chapel Hill Gardens West Funeral Home, 17W201 Roosevelt Road, Oakbrook Terrace. A prayer service will occur Friday, August 18, 2023 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, 17w201 Roosevelt Road, Oakbrook Terrace, IL 60181. Burial to follow at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery, 17W201 Roosevelt Road, Oakbrook Terrace, IL 60181.
