In memory of Mr. Carlson Adolph Bobino.
From the union of Felix Joseph Bobino and Euna Bell Boutte Bobino, four children were born: Charles, Felix, Carlson, and Norman Bobino. The parents moved the family from West Lake, Louisiana to Oakland, CA while the siblings were at a young age.
Carlson went to St. Patrick Elementary, Elmhurst Jr. High, and Castlemont High School. Upon graduation, he went into the Army Reserve for 6 months, and eventually completed 8 years of service. He enrolled at San Jose State University in 1958 on a football and academic scholarship. When his father unexpectedly passed away at a shipyard, as a welder, Carlson moved back to Oakland only after 3 years at San Jose State University. His mother remarried the Reverend Aque West, long time Pastor of Bible Fellowship Missionary Church in Oakland, CA. Subsequently, he finished his degree at Cal State Hayward University in Sociology and African American Studies.
Carlson met his lovely wife, Marilyn Ruth Stovall Bobino in the early 1970’s in Oakland, CA. Marilyn was on a Special Summer Program in Biostatistics at the University of California Berkeley from the University Of Arkansas At Pine Bluff (HBCU). Marilyn was also a Student Summer Missionary at the age of 19 in Terre Haute, Indiana from UAPB and continued her personal missionary duties throughout her life. Carlson traveled many miles that year and a half from Oakland, CA to Pine Bluff, AR to court the future Marilyn Stovall Bobino. Marilyn graduated from UAPB in Mathematics and later received a Masters Degree from UC Berkeley in Biostatistics.
Of that union, there were 4 children born: Keylla, DeMarko, Raelanka, and CaTameron Bobino.
Upon graduation from Cal State Hayward, Carlson achieved his Masters Degree at UC Berkeley, from the School Of Public Health in 1975. He became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Later, he helped organize the East Oakland Community Health Organization, which was located at Fruitvale Ave. and E14th, before its eventual moving to far East Oakland. He also worked for the City of Oakland under the MDTA program, which offered On The Job Training for up to 6 months for unemployed persons. He started working for the Alameda County Health Department in early 1975 as a Health Representative. The subsequent jobs he held were Director of Family Planning; DIrector of an all men’s program (first in the nation); Director Of Health Services at the jail facilities (Santa Rita, Oakland Men’s Jail, Juvenile Hall, and San Quentin). Carlson was on the board for the City Of Oakland Child Care Centers and on the board for the Oakland Housing Authority. Carlson Bobino worked for the Health Department for 28 years before retiring.
