—Proverbs 31:30 (KJV)
On April 10, 1946, God lovingly called Verneice Clayton Arnett into existence. With divine care and purpose, He fashioned her, and she was courageously and wonderfully made.
Verneice was the eldest daughter born to the late Luke and Julie Clayton in Emerson, Arkansas. From an early age, she stood before the throne of grace, confessed her faith in Christ, and was baptized at Pine Hill CME Church in Emerson, Arkansas, beginning a lifelong walk with her Lord.
After attending school in Emerson, Verneice relocated to Minden, Louisiana. Her life’s journey eventually led her to Berkeley, California and later relocated to Oakland where she united with Antioch Church under the leadership of the late Rev. R. T. George. Later she united with Revelation Church, under the leadership of Pastor James Abner, where she faithfully served until her health declined.
Professionally, Verneice was employed at the Lawrence Berkeley Radiation Laboratory, where she worked diligently for more than thirty years until her retirement.
As a poised and beautiful young woman, Verneice captured the attention of many admirers. Yet her heart belonged to one, Artie Arnett, Sr. Following a loving courtship, they were united in marriage, and was blessed to be able to rear four remarkable sons.
Verneice embodied the scripture:
“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”
1 Corinthians 13:7-8
She demonstrated this unfailing love not only in her devotion to God, but also through her unwavering commitment to her family, friends, and all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her father, Luke Clayton; her mother, Julie Clayton Sanders; her son, Leslie Cortez LaBlue; and her siblings James Clayton, Melvin Clayton, and Mattie Clayton Jackson.
Verneice leaves to cherish her precious memories and enduring legacy three sons: Rodney LaBlue (Chona), Michael Arnett, and Artie Arnett, Jr. (Florencia); seven siblings: Earnest Clayton, Almer Ray Clayton, Billie Ora Clayton, Jerry Clayton, Linda Jackson, Robert “Ricky” Clayton, and Kenny Clayton; eleven amazing grandchildren: JeNai Arnett, JaiQue Arnett, Aniyah LaBlue, Darrell Symon O’Campo, Vernice LaBlue, Rodrico LaBlue, Mikka Arnett, Rodney LaBlue Jr., Marjorie Arnett, Darius Arnett, and Jonathan Cable, nine phenomenal great grandchildren; Maylani Collin, D’metrious O’Campo, Domynic O’Campo, Jordyn Holman, Ariel LaBlue, Travis LaBlue, Elias Jeremiah White, Matthew Jakahi Gabriel White.
A very special aunt, Minister Rosie Stovall; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and devoted friends.
Though Verneice has transitioned from this earthly life, her spirit, faith, and love will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
As we reflect upon the life of Verneice Clayton Arnett, who she was and all that she gave it is abundantly clear that she knew God, walked with Him, and lived a life worthy of praise.
