David graduated from Florida Southern College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. His education helped shape the thoughtful, knowledgeable man who would go on to teach, serve, and inspire others throughout his life.
David dedicated his life to serving others in many different ways. Throughout the years he worked as a teacher, EMT, firefighter, and park ranger—roles that reflected his generous spirit and commitment to helping his community. No matter the position he held, David approached his work with compassion, dedication, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
One of David’s greatest passions was history. He was known as a gifted living historian who had a remarkable ability to bring the past to life. Through his portrayals of historical figures—from a Renaissance Knight to a Civil War surgeon to a pirate and even to personalities of early American life as a cow hunter — David shared stories that inspired curiosity and appreciation for history in all who listened. His enthusiasm, knowledge, and storytelling left a lasting impression on friends, students, and audiences alike.
Above all, David was a devoted husband and father. He shared a loving marriage with the love of his life, Lori, and found great pride and joy in his family. His warmth, wisdom, and humor made him a steady presence and a source of strength for those who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lori; his son, Brent Steinmetz (Chris); and his sister, Diane Hutchinson.
David’s life touched many, and his legacy of service, storytelling, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be remembered as a loving and loyal husband and father that will be forever missed.
