Ernesto “Lefty” Martinez, Jr., affectionately known as “Papa,” was born on December 31, 1943, in Puerto Rico and spent most of his life in Florida, ultimately settling down in Ocala, where he built a life centered around family, love, and community. He passed away unexpectedly on November 16, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, strength, and devotion that will be forever cherished.
Lefty was a man defined by heart. His greatest joys were simple ones—spending time with family, sharing laughter, telling stories, and especially watching or talking baseball, the game he loved so deeply. His presence could fill a room with comfort, humor, and an unmistakable sense of warmth. To know him was to feel loved, accepted, and protected.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lillian Martinez, his steadfast partner in every chapter of life. Lefty leaves behind his children—David Martinez, Ernest Martinez, Eric Martinez, and Milagros LaBorde—as well as his in-laws Lisa, Natascha, Laura, and Jason, whom he loved as his own.
“Papa” was the treasured grandfather of ten grandchildren: Joshua, Jagger, Dalton, Logan, Ashley, Angelica, Carly, Cameron, Kiana, and Olivia; and the adored great-grandfather of eleven great-grandchildren: Caden, Everly, Creed, Amora, Arrow, Stone, Cove, Cali, Dove, Caroline, and Isla. His family was his world, and every one of them held a special place in his heart.
Lefty’s lifelong love for baseball was matched only by his love for family. He built a foundation of unity, loyalty, and togetherness that his loved ones will carry forward for generations. His stories, his laughter, his guidance, and his gentle presence will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Ernesto “Lefty” Martinez, Jr. will be remembered not only for the life he lived, but for the love he gave—steadfast, honest, and unconditional. His absence leaves an ache, but his legacy leaves immeasurable comfort and pride.
He will be deeply missed, forever celebrated and never forgotten.
