

Stanley Cornelius Meggie was born on September 1, 1932, in the Parish of Portland, Jamaica, West Indies, to Alexander and Isadora Meggie (Pupa and Mammie). Stanley was one of eight children. He is preceded in death by his parents, all his siblings, his beloved wife of 55 years, Clarabelle, and his eldest son, Winston. Stanley and Clarabelle were married on April 26, 1961. Together they raised eight children, three sons and five daughters. Stanley was a farmer before migrating from Jamaica to Hempstead, NY in the late 70s to pursue a better life for his family. His first job on arriving in the US was at Phoenix Laboratories in Hicksville, NY, and Rego Labs, Westbury, NY as a Top Coater. Stanley later worked at Sun Harbor Nursing Home, Roslyn, NY and later at North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital, Syosset, NY. Stanley always took pride in his work and was highly regarded by staff and patients alike. Stanley founded SM Grocery (The Shop) in March of 1989, a place for individuals craving a taste of home to come and unwind for a little while. You could purchase authentic Jamaican cuisine, purchase grocery, a barrel to ship goods to family back home, and sample the best Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork outside of Portland, JA with Stanley’s signature seasoning. SM Grocery continues to thrive after 30 plus years. To carry on the SM legacy, The Shop is now under the management of his daughter, Camille.
Stanley and his family were very passionate about opening their homes to shelter anyone who needed a place to stay. Stanley fostered a very kind, caring and loving home and would feed anyone who was hungry. The family expanded beyond his biological children as so many people refer to him as Papa. He was a very respectable man, who was firm, when necessary, but was a gentle giant. He would light up a room when he walks in, he was so full of life. Always bring with him, his infectious smile and sense of humor. Stanley grew up in a Christian home. He loved the Lord, and it showed in his actions and his warm and welcoming demeanor. He was a father to many, uncle, grandfather, a friend, and a surrogate brother. Upon retirement, Stanley moved to Ocala, FL with his wife Clarabelle where he became very active in his community. Stanley loved his family dearly and looked forward to family gatherings. He would spend his time telling stories and making everyone laugh. Making his famous Jerk Seasoning and would always jerk pork or chicken on the grill. He was an avid farmer who basked in his garden. When you visited his home, you were treated to a hearty meal. When it was time to leave, he would give you bags of fresh produce from the garden - callaloo, aloe, gully beans, pepper mint, hot peppers, thyme and of course a jar of jerk seasoning. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
Stanley leaves behind, Sons: Linton and Auvil (Derrick); Daughters: Linnette (Lin) Thomas, Sharon (Joy) Ramdeen, Narisse Meggie-Brown, Camille Meggie-Langley, and Careen Meggie-Gordon; Niece: Avis (Annette); Nephews: George, Ripton, and Gregory (Dave); Sons-in-law: Cleveland, Rudy, & Davin; Daughters-in-law: Petula & Lyssett; Grandchildren: Kenton (Pete), Tonnette (Shawna), Richard, Winston Jr., Linton Jr., Jonnette (Shiann), Ashley, Javon, Tyre, Khalil, Mikayla, Andrea, Ahriyahn, Davin Jr (DJ), Andrea, and Ayana; Grandnieces: Jacqueline, Roxanne, Sharla, and Stephanie; Grandnephews: Patrick, George Jr., Christopher, and Justin. He also leaves behind countless great grandchildren, great grandnieces, great grandnephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
A visitation for Stanley will be held Saturday, September 11, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Marion Oaks Assembly of God Church, 13977 SW 32nd Terrace Road, Ocala, FL 34473. A funeral service will occur Saturday, September 11, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, 13977 SW 32nd Terrace Road, Ocala, FL 34473. A committal service will occur Saturday, September 11, 2021 from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, 5740 South Pine Ave, Ocala, FL 34480.
