We chatted quietly for a couple of years. I thought of him then as the quiet one,
until he came to my rescue when I was upset by a stalker.
We then became closer, and he was still the quiet one.
In 2002, Tom came to visit me in Australia for a 3 month visit, and he was
still the quiet one. We had time enough together to know that we
were compatible, and we decided that we would marry after he had returned
to the States and sold his house etc.,
To his family he wasn't Tom, he was Butch, or Uncle Butch.
To me he was Buff (which was his screen name) and to
my family he was Buff, but also known as the quiet American.
When Buff returned to Australia , we were married on July 19th 2003.
We planned to take care of each other for the rest of our lives.
God had different plans, and Buff was taken from me much too soon.
He accepted his cancer and treatment with patience and dignity,
as only a quiet American would. After all, he was a Marine.
His loves in life were me and his dogs whom he spoiled totally, and his family.
His favourite places were Walmart and the hardware stores where he
liked to spend hours - just looking. His favourite posession was his Abernacky
card, and he was very proud to be a descendent of Native Americans.
His last few days were traumatic. He fought like the warrior that I never knew
existed in him. He was no longer the quiet one, but when God called him home,
he went quietly.
I will miss him more than anyone will ever know. He will live in my heart forever,
this quiet Native American Butch that I called "Buff"
