LONG BRANCH — Amy S. Keith (Sroka) passed away at Monmouth Medical Center, May 8, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was born in Jersey City on May 3, 1944. She grew up in Belmar and graduated from Asbury Park High School. In 1965, she graduated from Monmouth College with a degree in education. Amy was fortunate to have attended and graduated college with her father Arnold. She very much enjoyed that they shared some of the same classes and graduated together. Amy was married to Barry D. Keith, that same year, and moved to Newark where she started her elementary teaching career.
In 1967 she moved back to Monmouth County and lived in Neptune where her two sons, David and Aaron were born. As her children were growing up, the family moved to Oakhurst. In 1975, after graduating from law school, Barry became ill and passed. Still a fulltime teacher, Amy began working at the JCC summer camp program in Deal. It was here, she met and later married Charles Stone, since divorced. Amy taught, for many years in the Hillel Yeshiva, in Deal. From there, she was hired by the Long Branch Board of Education. Amy's career continued at Rumson County Day where she was employed for over 10 years. In 2014 Amy began to substitute teach in Long Branch. She continued to teach there until October 2023 when she was diagnosed with cancer. Amy truly enjoyed teaching and empowering her students.
Amy loved to read and complete a crossword puzzle while sitting on the Avon beach by the jetty listening to the waves. She enjoyed a good game of Scrabble and working in her flower garden. She volunteered at Lunch Break in Red Bank on Fridays. She was a runner and completed many local runs for charities, including the Turkey Trot and the Just Us Girls run. In addition, she completed the Marine Corp Marathon.
Amy also loved to travel. As a single parent, she embarked with her two young sons to many places including California, Florida and Israel.
Amy was always up for an adventure. She was blessed to join her children and grandchildren on their vacations. She went with David, his wife Regina, granddaughters Jordan and Rebecca on a safari in Africa and traveled to Europe and Asia with them. With her son Aaron, his wife Donna, grandchildren Ariana and Avery, they toured London, the Cotswold section of England and Paris. In the summer of 2023 Amy took her four grandchildren to Greece where they visited the Acropolis, Ios and Santorini. She also enjoyed many beach getaways with her family. She loved Martha's Vineyard, Long Beach Island and the Jersey shore, sharing this love with her grandchildren. They were the light in her life and her reason for being.
She was predeceased by her parents, Arnold and Jean Sroka, sister Rise Burkett Sroka, niece Juliet Burkett, brother-in-law Attilio Thomas Alterio. She leaves behind her two sons and their families, a brother, Jerry Sroka and his wife, Mariette Hartley, her sister, Wilma Alterio and her husband William Dietze, sisters-in-law Vicki Blank and Nancy Hill, many nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and her dog, Casey.
She will be remembered as a loving mother, an inspiring grandmother, a caring sister and a great friend to all who knew her.
A family celebration of her life will be held. Donations can be made to Lunch Break in Red Bank.
