Cynthia Joy Weston, née Weber, 95, beloved matriarch of a large and loving family, peacefully passed away on December 1, 2024, surrounded by her family. Cynthia was born on the 25th of October, 1929, in Jersey City, New Jersey to Louis and Ruth (née Brauer) Weber. Shortly after her high school graduation in 1948, she married Robert Weston after a whirlwind romance begun on the Colony Surf Club’s tennis court. They remained happily married for 69 years until his death in 2017. Their first child Steven was born in Jersey City in 1950. A move down to Monmouth County followed, as did four more children: Jim, Bonnie, Beth, and Susan. In 1971, she embraced another daughter, Cindy. After achieving a degree of worldly success, Cynthia and Bob built and moved into a one-of-a-kind house in West Long Branch that would become its own character in the family’s history and lore. Cynthia took the job of raising children seriously, and her house was filled with love, education, chores, and high expectations. She also took her group of dear friends seriously, hosting for them and family at the house’s swimming pool and tennis court.
Cynthia was intimately involved in her beloved community of West Long Branch. She served for years as Lead Cookie Mom for the West Long Branch Girl Scouts. She was locally famous as the French Fry Lady at the West Long Branch Fair. She volunteered in the local elementary schools, reading to children well into her 80s. She was very proud of her service in the maternity ward at Monmouth Medical Center, using her nurse’s aid certification to help care for infants and new mothers.
The first of 19 grandchildren arrived in 1974 and the first of (so far) 18 great grandchildren arrived in 2007. She also has a great-great grandchild by marriage.
In her spare time, Cynthia loved few things more than bridge, and her weekly games with Henry and Belle Klein were the stuff of legend. She enjoyed travelling to find foreign dolls for her daughters, and also enjoyed growing tomatoes and other crops in and around the house. She was a lifelong animal lover, with many stray dogs finding their forever homes with her. She also was the proud owner of a potbellied pig, Sabretta, the font of so many family stories. She was the caretaker for birds, cats, and any other critters who found themselves lucky enough to live near the house.
Everyone who knew Cynthia knew her love of singing, storytelling, and time with beloved family. Through story and song she imparted wisdom and family history, tying generations together in love and appreciation. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, her brother Charles, and her son Jim.
She is survived by wonderful stories, five children, and a bevy of in-laws, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Services will be on Wednesday December 4th at 11:00 am at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapel in Ocean, NJ. Internment immediately to follow at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ. Shiva will take place at the house at 10 Weston Way, on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, with a minyan at 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: West Long Branch Emergency Medical Services
