Irwin was born on July 28, 1922, to Harry and Mary (Diamond) Schwefel in Manhattan. Irwin enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941. He served his country proudly in the Pacific staying in Theater well past the end of the war and received his discharge in 1946. A child of the depression, he lost his mother at 8 years old. As a very proud war veteran, Irwin was an exemplary member of the greatest generation.
In 1944, Irwin married his high school sweetheart, Paula Nissim, in New York and went on to have three children, Mitchell, Candy and Jack. In 1968, Irwin moved his family to Ocean Township, NJ to the home he resided in for the next 55 years. Irwin was a true fixer upper. If it was broken, he would fix it. This included his daughter’s braces as well as his own dentures.
Irwin’s career spanned over 50 years in sales, management, as well as many years working for the State of New Jersey as an Investigator. He brought a bounty of energy to everything he did and met all endeavors with enthusiasm.
Irwin enjoyed boating, his children, his dogs, in later life- baseball, but most of all - the love of his life - Paula, to whom his devotion was without equal.
Irwin was predeceased by his parents Mary and Harry Schwefel, his wife Paula, and his brother Nathan. He is survived by his son Mitchell and wife Linda, his daughter Candy Hanus and husband Wayne, and his son Jack and wife Lori, along with five grandchildren and their spouses as well as eleven great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Bloomfield Cooper Funeral Chapel (2130 NJ-35, Ocean Township, NJ,07712) on November 24,2023 at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown, NJ, an organization Irwin volunteered at and felt strongly about.
