Kalman "Kal" Liebeskind of Tinton Falls was born in Newark, New Jersey but grew up at the Shore graduating from Bradley Beach Grammar School and later from Asbury Park High School, class of 1949. He was devoted to his family - his late wife of 64 years, Arlyne, his 2 daughters, Susan and Robin, and his grandchildren, Gregory, Adam and Mallory. Kal is survived by his daughters Susan Sarafan (Steven Pavon) and Robin Liebeskind (Ralph Ford) and his grandsons Gregory Sarafan (Adam Scott) and Adam Sarafan, as well as many nieces and nephews. Kal was predeceased by his wife, Arlyne, his granddaughter Mallory Liebeskind-Vaisman, his parents, Rose and Michael Liebeskind and his brothers Leonard and Alvin (both of whom served in World War II).
After attending Purdue University following high school, he opted to join the United States Navy in 1951 and served for 4 years on an attack transport ship during the Korean War. He was a hospital corpsman and traveled the world (almost being stranded in Casablanca as he loved to tell it). He received the National Defense Service Medal, European Occupation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his service. He was also a life member of the Jewish War Veterans on the USA. After his honorable discharge, Kal joined his father and brother Leonard in business, Kal's Restaurant Equipment of Asbury Park, where he became known as the "king" of used equipment.
Kal's passion was golf, having played since he was a kid. After retirement, he joined to Woodlake Country Club where he won the title of "Senior Champion" one year. In the off season, he liked to play gin rummy with his friends at the club. H was also widely known for his cooking abilities and sometimes brought brisket or eggplant to the "boys" which always left them wanting more. One of the joyful moments of being a grandfather came when Adam asked for a set of beginner clubs. Kal bought some clubs and his golf buddies helped put together the woods, irons , putter - even the golf pro chipped in a new golf bag. They all appreciated what it meant to him.
Spring was Kal's favorite time of year as he loved to garden. With much space around his various homes, he filled them all with beautiful plants and flowers and even helped the neighbors plant gardens. Kal had many other hobbies over the years which included antiquing in Bucks County and studying the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and attending battle reenactments in Freehold and Gettysburg.
Kal was an all-around "good guy" and he will be missed for his kindness, compassion and good nature. He was a great joy to all his family and friends, entertaining us with his great stories and even his corny jokes.
