May Steinberg (Karp), 80, of Holmdel, NJ died December 17, 2018 in Red Bank. Mrs. Steinberg was born and raised in the Bronx with her loving mother, Ida and sister Lillian. She graduated from City College with a BA and later received a Master's degree in Education from Rutgers University. She married Sherman Steinberg, a chemist, and after brief stints in California and Baltimore, where she taught elementary school, Mrs. Steinberg and her husband moved to Matawan, NJ. They eventuallysettled in Holmdel to raise their children.
Mrs. Steinberg is survived by her children, Jo-Ann Shakarjian, MD of River Vale and Andrew Steinberg and wife Joann Pezzano of Chester, NJ, along with her four beloved grandchildren, Carnig and Rachael Shakarjian, and Daniel and Annabelle Steinberg along with her sister Lillian Rosenthal of Massapequa, NY and cherished long-term best friends, Barbara Pertchik of Oceanport, NJ, Judy Engel of Port Charlotte, FL and Arlene Rubin of Lido Beach, NY. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Sherman Steinberg.
Mrs. Steinberg was a devoted friend who was still a voracious reader of novels and the Wall Street Journal and enjoyed her weekly Bridge game. She had traveled to many places in the world with family and friends, but she loved nowhere better than to head to New York City to catch a Broadway show and eat at Carmines, Dominic’s, and Katz's Deli.
Mrs. Steinberg was very proud of her two children and their educations and professions. She was also very invested in the successes and educations of her four grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the JCC Manhattan, Special Needs Programs in tribute to May Steinberg. Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels are in charge of arrangements.
Shiva will be at 5 Coventry Square, Holmdel NJ 07733.
