

We celebrate the life of George Wesley Brewer who went to his eternal destination in heaven on August 26, 2012, taken from us too early after a valiant battle with cancer. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Crescent Park Baptist Church, 3002 E. University in Odessa with family visitation following the service.
George was 73 when he died in Odessa, TX. He was born May 11, 1939 in Tucson, AZ and grew up in Durant, OK. He is the son of the late Georgia Mae Boner Brewer Lyday and William Lanford Brewer. He was married to Marijon Glosson on August 25, 1962 and enjoyed 50 years of committed marriage that is a legacy to his children. He graduated from Durant High School, Southeastern Oklahoma State University (BS-Math/Physics), and finally Oklahoma State University (MS-Math). George was an accomplished musician in the high school band playing the saxophone and serving as band president.
After college, he worked for General Dynamics in Ft. Worth, TX then moved into his calling at Odessa College where he taught Mathematics for 30 years before his well deserved retirement. He was head of the Math department for nine years while at Odessa College, procured the 1st computer for the math department and enjoyed teaching his students with all his heart. He was a member of the bylaws committee and exhibit coordinator for the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) – Texas Section. In 2001, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the MAA Texas Section.
He was the recipient of the National Institute of Staff and Organizational Development Excellence award – from UT Austin. He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. He also served as the UIL Number Sense leader while at Odessa College. George elected to donate his body to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and so continues his passion of teaching.
He was a member of Crescent Park Baptist Church and served as a deacon in the church. He was an avid hunter who loved to spend time at “the ranch” and enjoyed woodworking as well.
He is survived by his wife Marijon Glosson Brewer of Odessa; his daughter Jorjann Davis and husband Jerry of Midland, his son John Wesley Brewer and wife Connie of Buford, GA, and his daughter Jan Lee Minifie and husband Jonathan of Highlands Ranch, CO; his eight grandchildren: Wesley Thomas and Melody Jan Davis of Midland; Kathryn Marie, Lindsey Sarah and Alexandra Lee Brewer of Buford, GA and Brandon Thomas, Renée LeeAnn, and Brianna Mae Minifie of Highlands Ranch, CO; his sister Billie Lee Parker of McKinney, TX; his nephew Russ Parker of McKinney, TX; nieces Karol Livingston of Denison, TX and Lisa Eastman of Blue Ridge, TX and their families; cousins in Phoenix and Tucson, AZ; as well as numerous close friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Georgia Mae Boner Brewer Lyday and William Lanford Brewer and brother-in-law, Jack Parker.
