

Gerald Boyce Evans, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Monahans, Texas, died October 5, 2015, in San Antonio, Texas.
Gerald was born February 2, 1920 to Arthur and Mabel Evans in Longstreet, Louisiana. He graduated from Longstreet High School in 1937. After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Gerald enlisted with the Army Air Corps in 1941, sailed to Australia, and served in the Pacific Theater in the 38th and 90th Bomber Group for four years until his honorable discharge in 1945.
He reached the rank of Sergeant, and was awarded a Bronze Star for his actions in the Papua New Guinea Campaign.
After the war, Gerald met and married Ophelia Kinnard on July 1, 1947. He went to work for Gulf Oil Corporation in 1945, and retired on January 1, 1983, from Warren Petroleum Corporation. He was a plant manager at plants located in Ward, Runnek, and Crane Counties. He worked 38 years in the natural gas processing industry.
Converted at age 17, Gerald served as an adult Bible teacher, deacon, and committee member in multiple churches in Texas. He served, as well, on the Baptist General Convention of Texas Executive Board, and as chairman of the Mexican Rural Work Committee of the BGCT. In a civic capacity he served on the Monahans Hospital Board for five years, two years as Chairman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two of his three brothers, Jack Evans and Harry Evans, and his sister, Doris Farnum
He is survived by his wife, Ophelia Evans, of San Antonio, his son, David Evans of Odesa, his daughter, Liz Miller (and her husband Barry) of San Antonio, his brother A.T. Evans (and his wife Janet) of Houston, his five grandchildren Luke Evans (and wife Marianne), Andrew Evans (and fianceé Michelle), Robert Evans (and wife Adrianne), Jonathan Miller (and wife Trista), and Emily Johnson (and husband Micah). He is survived, by eight great grandchildren: Nate Evans, Ainsley Evans, Ben Evans, Huxley Miller, Hazel Miller, Nox Miller, and Ofelia Miller.
His life was defined by his faith in Christ, love for family, dedication to country and vocation, and commitment to church.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 8, at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home in Odessa. His memorial service will be at First Baptist Church, Monahans, on Friday, October 9, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Charles Inman officiating.
Memorials may be given to Gideon International and First Baptist Church, Monahans, Texas.
