

Joe was born November 20, 1922 In Plains, Texas to Joseph and Maggie Hassell. He served in the Army Air Corp during WWII. He married Marita Beeson in 1950 enjoying 64 years of marriage. Joe retired from Peyton’s Bicycles after 20 years of service. He belonged to the Permian Basin Bicycle Association and rode many a west Texas mile on one of his numerous bikes. At age 67, he rode his bicycle 1600 miles in 22 days from Portland, Maine to Orlando, Florida and in the process raised funds for Ronald McDonald House and American Wheelman. He was an avid biker up until his 90th birthday, a goal he set for himself and one of his most memorable achievements. Joe enjoyed woodworking and crafted many items including over 300 crosses which can still be seen in yards all over Odessa and beyond. Joe, along with his wife also volunteered for Meals on Wheels delivering meals one day a week for over 10 years. Joe was a long time member of Crossroads Fellowship.
Joe Hassell is survived by his wife Marita, his three daughters, Karen McCord and her husband, Phil, of Odessa; Kathy Hassell of Odessa, and Karla Ross and her husband, Charles of Yanji, China; five grandchildren, Jamie LaRue and husband Dennis of San Antonio, B.J. Cowen and wife Jennifer of Odessa, Sam Ross and his wife Susan of South Portland, Me, Tamara Hess and her husband John of Boise, Id., and Andrew Ross and his wife Deborah of Atlanta, Ga.; ten great-grandchildren, and two great, great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Joe's life will be held Thursday, February 12th at 2:00 p.m. at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home with Dr. Griffin Jones of Crossroads Fellowship officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to Crossroads Fellowship Missions Fund PO Box 14710, Odessa, TX 79768.
