

Sam was born on December 13, 1931 in Southard, Oklahoma to Gail and Lester Mannering. At the age of 9 years, the family relocated to Sweetwater, Texas where Sam finished school. After graduating from Sweetwater High School in 1951, he joined the Navy and served until 1955. Sam married Betty Jean Derington on Dec. 20, 1952, while on leave. The couple settled in Long Beach, California, and had the first of three children, Sue Ann.
In 1957, Sam and Betty moved to Odessa, Texas. Their family grew with the addition of Jo Lea, and Mac Lester. Sam started working for the US Postal Service in 1957, where he worked for 31 years, at the Dixie, Downtown, and West Odessa locations. After retirement in 1989, Sam spent his time traveling with Betty and friends, playing golf and working several summers at the Boy Scout Ranch BTSR.
Sam was active in several different organizations. These included the American Legion, where he served as Commander 1993 to 1996, East Zone Commander 1998 to 2000, Vice Commander 1 year, Adjutant, and Sargent at Arms 7 years. He was a member of the 40/8 where he served in several offices including, Garde De La Porte, and The Bass Club. He also was a life member of The Boy Scouts of America. While in the Boy Scouts he received several awards including Silver Beaver, OA Vigil Honor and was an advisor to the Tatanka Lodge O.A. who honored him with the James E. West Fellowship.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gail and Lester Mannering, and a sister Mary Ann.
Survivors include wife Betty Jean Mannering, daughter Sue Ann Nelson and life partner Frances Beaurivage of Lincoln, NE, daughter Jo Lea Stewart and her husband Edward Stewart of Odessa, son Mac Lester Mannering and life partner Jack Harding of Los Angeles, CA, a brother Tom Mannering, 5 Grandchildren, 3 Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the American Legion on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 1pm.
