“Brew,” as he was known by many, was born February 10, 1945, in Portland, Oregon, to Walter Scott Brewer, Jr. and Maxine Marie Brewer. The only son of seven children, he used to pridefully joke if he could survive six sisters, he could survive anything; they include, Eleanor Esmon, Sonja Parker, Margaret Brewer and Nancy Brewer of the metroplex area, BJ Grayson of Kerrville, and Janet Lietz of Odessa. He is also survived by brothers-in-law; James Medlin of Shallowater and Stan Grayson of Kerrville, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
On February 14, 1964, he married his wife of almost 50 years, Lyn Medlin Brewer, in Lamesa, Texas. Together, they raised three precious children; a son, Walter Scott Brewer, IV, of Odessa; and daughters Stephanie Cheri Jones and husband Lee of Odessa, and Leslie Dawn Boswell and husband John of Midland. Scott was known as PawPaw to four of the best grandchildren ever; Patrick B Ray, Aiden Radford Scott Boswell, Abram Scott Brewer, and Norah Raelyn Boswell. He was adored, loved, and cherished greatly by them all.
Scott retired in 2001, after 36 years at the petrochemical complex in Odessa. Since his retirement, he raised the neighborhood tomatoes and peppers, manicured his lawn, and spread morning glory and periwinkle seeds all over Texas with his family. He had the “prettiest yard and alley on the block.” He had friends all over town, and all the dog walkers were his friends.
Scott never met a stranger. He loved to go to garage sales, family outings, and barbeques. His house was considered Halloween and Santa Claus Central to many. You could always get warm by his pot-belly stove and generous heart.
He also had a strong interest in teaching Cub Scouts and their fathers the fine art of making a special pinewood derby car. He always had the tools ready and the garage door open to lend a hand. Softball was one of his most passionate interests, where he both played and coached. He was an avid teacher of his many unique skills he had acquired through a lifetime of carpentry, plumbing, and jack-of-all-trades. Although his common refrain of “let me show you a trick I learned in the Army” left many wondering, he was never actually in the Army… that we are aware of.
Scott had a most generous and giving heart. His generosity ranged from passing out his tomatoes to the neighborhood walkers to building gates and other projects for friends and neighbors.
