Edna Phillips, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully, leaving a legacy filled with love and cherished memories. She was born on February 1, 1926, to Amanda Hatcher Gipson and Charles Christopher Gipson in Leon, Oklahoma. Edna married Burl H. Phillips on August 5, 1944, and together they built a warm and loving home in Oklahoma City.
A talented individual, Edna played basketball in her youth and was the salutatorian of her class. She was also a great seamstress, known for her ability to create beautiful garments and quilts that her family cherished. Edna took great pride in her culinary skills, known for her excellent cooking, especially her favorite desserts—chocolate fried pies and Italian cream cake, alongside her famous chocolate pie that brought joy to family gatherings.
Edna was a devoted mother to her three daughters, Sharon Powell, Janelle Miller (husband Jack Miller), and Gayla Parrott, who survive her. She took great pride in her role as grandmother to her grandchildren, Brian Powell, Ben Powell, Tony (Katie) Miller, Marnie (Jamey) Wright, Dustin (Jenny) Macdonald, and Chelsea (Rod) Richardson, and she treasured her 13 great-grandchildren.
Notably compassionate, Edna cared for up to 17 feral cats at times, demonstrating her loving nature and dedication to animals, especially her beloved dog, Yumba, and her cat, Miss Kitty.
Edna was preceded in death by her loving husband, Burl, her late son-in-law, Gordon Powell (Sharon's husband), her late son-in-law, Steve Parrott (Gayla's husband), and her great-grandson, Shea. She will always be remembered for her sweet nature, warm touch, and the comfort she provided to those she loved. Her kitchen was often filled with the delicious aromas of her wonderful meals, where her family could always find solace.
Though Edna’s passing leaves a tremendous void in our hearts, we find comfort in knowing that she is reunited with her loved ones in heaven. We will carry her spirit with us always, cherishing the beautiful memories we’ve shared and looking forward to the day we meet again.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Integris Hospice, particularly nurses Doris and Beverly, for their exceptional care during her last days here on earth.
In honor of Edna’s life, we invite friends and family to join us in celebrating her legacy and remembering the love she so freely gave to all.
A graveside service for Edna will be held Thursday, February 27, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Resthaven Memory Garden, 500 SW 104th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73139.
