On April 24,1953, he married the love of his life, Patsy Ruth Diggs, whom he affectionately called ‘precious,’ and their marriage spanned 66 years before her passing in 2020.
Gerald’s 91 years of life included 77 years of ministry, faithfully serving the Lord at home and abroad. He pastored churches in Marsden; Elmer; Zaneis; Marietta; Miami; Pauls Valley; Augusta, Georgia; Carnegie; and Cookson. For 11 years, Gerald served as the Director of Missions for East Central Baptist Association and as the administrator of Tenkiller Baptist Campground. He served on and chaired numerous committees and boards of the Oklahoma Baptist Convention. He also established the Grace and Knowledge tape ministry. Gerald loved Falls Creek, Vacation Bible School, and mission trips with youth groups. He led numerous mission trips around the United States and the world, including medical mission trips to Africa and down the Amazon to remote villages in Brazil.
He served with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief at major events and natural disasters in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas and the 9/11 response in New York. Gerald’s ministry efforts stemmed from the fact that he loved people and he loved the Lord. He loved to share the gospel with those others thought were unreachable. Gerald is one guy that never really retired. He was faithful to the finish, preaching and teaching regularly as pastor emeritus at Cookson Baptist Church while residing at Go Ye Village in Tahlequah.
