Geraldine "Peggy" Funk, of The Village, Oklahoma, peacefully slipped away to be with her Lord and Savior on February 5, 2018. She was born to John and Fannie VanMeter (nee Helmns) on March 17, 1926, in Dow, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her husband John H. Funk, Jr., sister, Shirley Joan, and brothers John Jr., Clifford, Eugene, and Vernon.
Peggy was raised and went to High School in Henryetta, Oklahoma, and was Drum Majorette of the Henryetta Hens High School Marching Band and played the clarinet, while her brothers starred on the football field. She was very athletic and enjoyed the outdoors. She also worked part time jobs during that time at the town bakery and drug store. She was the Spelling Bee champion and could most recently alphabetically recite the 77 counties of Oklahoma from memory. After high school, she attended business school and worked for the Okmulgee County Commissioner.
In 1947, she married John Funk, a very handsome World War II Marine, who had been an All-State football player at rival Okmulgee High School, and went on to play at the University of Oklahoma. After their marriage in Fort Smith, Arkansas, they lived in Okmulgee, Midwest City, and then permanently in Oklahoma City. Mom loved and adored her family and was devoted to them. She enjoyed dancing, playing bridge, cooking, socializing with friends, and tailgating and going to OU football and basketball games, both home and away. Peggy was a member of The Village Baptist Church, the Clubettes (a division of Young Men’s Club), Lakeview Country Club, Sooner Club, Tip In Club, a Pride of Oklahoma Booster, and a lifelong Sooner fan.
Peggy is survived by her son, John III of Houston, TX and wife Barb, daughter DeiDre’ Six of OKC and husband Mike, grandchildren; Joy Payne, Amy Hutchinson, Jeff Six, Samantha Six, and Claire Six, and great-grandchildren; Payton, Paige, Perry, Reese, Korbin, and Olivia, many nieces and nephews, and her close friend and confidant Jan.
All that knew her will miss her infectious smile, personality, and energy!
The family would like to thank all of the staff at Legend Senior Living for their wonderful care and love for Mom, especially Barbara and Sharece, as well as the wonderful people at Valir Hospice Care for their physical, psychological, social, and spiritual love and support, especially Chaplain Miles.
A Memorial Service will be held at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Funeral Home, Oklahoma City at 6600 Broadway Extension at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 10, 2018. After a reception at the funeral home, an Entombment will follow at Chapel Hill Mausoleum. Viewing will be from 8:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday and Friday, and the family will welcome guests from 6:00 until 8:00 on Friday evening.
