He had a wonderful childhood growing up on Camden Way with many neighborhood friends. He attended Nichols Hills Elementary and graduated from Harding High School with the “Class of 64” where he was on the swim team and the tennis team. He made many lifelong friends at Harding who he cherished his entire life. He spent his freshman year at Wesleyan in Connecticut and returned to OU his sophomore year, joining many friends in the Phi Gam House. He graduated from OU School of Law in 1971 and began his lifelong practice of law specializing in contract negotiations. He practiced law with several firms including Kerr/Davis, Lawrence, Ellis and Harmon. He served as general counsel for OMPA (Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority) and finally AFS, a small tech company which grew to international scope. He was a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association and the Oklahoma Trial Lawyers Association. However, he always found time to do lots of pro bono work for many of Karlie’s students and friends. As his health declined, he stopped the formal practice of law but remained interested in legal matters all of his life.
He had an inquisitive and quick mind and excelled at many things. He was an excellent tennis player and spent many happy hours on the tennis courts and loved watching his boys play tennis. He was a master bridge player, earning more than 2000 master points, and was one of the original members of the Wednesday night poker group at the Club. He was an active coach in his sons’ sports and Coach Harvey could be seen most spring afternoons in the park coaching t-ball, baseball, soccer and a little basketball in the winter. He coached the famous Tigers, A-Team, the Dudes and the Yankees just to name a few. He loved OU football, Manchester United soccer, extra thick vanilla malts, OU girls’ softball, any card game, a good glass of wine and traveling with Karlie.
He married Karlie in 1976, and they began a 48-year life together that was filled with good friends, exotic travels and lots of fun. They traveled the world together spending many happy times in Singapore, London, Rome, Siena, the Maldives, Alaska, Bali and they rode the royal Rajasthan train Palaces on Wheels through India. They were devoted to each other and truly loved and respected each other.
However, he would be the first to tell you that what was closest to his heart was his two sons who he treasured beyond words and took great pride in watching them develop into fine young men. His family came first and his love for his family knew no boundaries. He was always there for a family outing, birthday celebration or graduation and he was always there to provide support and unconditional love.
He is survived by his wife Karlie, his son Lee and daughter-in-law Lauren, and his beloved granddaughter Grace who brightened every day of his life in Mesa, Arizona and his son Michael of Redlands, California. In addition, he leaves his sister Donna Harmon of Oklahoma City, brother Bill Harmon of Tulsa, sister-in-law Kelly Daviee of Edmond, mother-in-law Frances Thompson of OKC, numerous nieces and nephews and many lifelong friends and colleagues.
He faced many health challenges throughout his life, but he met each of them with strength and courage. He was a kind man who was always full of fun and ready for the next joke.
Please join us for a Celebration of his Life at 12:00 on Saturday, January 25, 2025 for brunch at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club in Harry’s Bar. He would want his friends and family to be together. We’re going to have biscuits and gravy. He would like that.
