We have lost another of the Greatest Generation. Dr. John Brothers, combat veteran of the U.S. Navy who served in the Pacific during WWII, passed away on June 2, 2020. John was born to Charles and Addie Brothers in Grimes, OK on August 10, 1926. The family of 6 enduring great hardship during the Great Depression and dust bowl, migrating to the west coast in search of work. After returning to Oklahoma, John joined the Navy. Upon return from the war, he graduated from Leedey High School and married Vilet Herren. They had two sons, Lance and Bruce.
John received his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma City University. He then became a teacher and later a Principal in the Oklahoma City public school system. After receiving his doctorate from the University of Oklahoma, he became Director of Ninety elementary schools and later ten middle schools for the Oklahoma City Public school system.
John retired as a professor at the University of Central Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandra, sons Lance and wife Betsy, Bruce and wife Natalie, granddaughters Catie Brothers and Sarah Brothers May and great granddaughters Elizabeth and Francis. He will be greatly missed.
Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, June 10, 2020, 10:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Burial Park. Memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity or an organization of your choice.
