I’m so sorry to hear of Dr. Boatman’s passing. He saved my life back in 1990 and performed several surgeries on me. Such a strong, knowledgeable surgeon. He was very direct at times. I’m certain it came from his deep knowledge which I’m forever grateful for all he did for me.

In 1979, Dr Boatman performed an adrenalectomy on me for a rare tumor, pheochromocytoma.  I had a cardiac arrest during the surgery & he performed cardiac compressions on me for a very long time.  Later, when I was in ICU, I told him I didn’t remember seeing the bright light that others saw during similar circumstances.  He told me he had experienced a near drowning & see didn’t see the light either.  We decided we would be going to the same place later on.  

I called Dr. Boatman our family surgeon, he operated on me another time (plus several office biopsies), twice on my mother, and once on my husband.  He always took my phone calls when I had questions.  He always remembered that day he saved my life.  

I’m sorry I was not able to attend his funeral.  Obviously he meant a lot to me.  The last time I talked with him, he was about to celebrate his 92nd or 93rd birthday.

What a Legend!  I met Dr Boatman on his first day here at the DDD.  We became fast friends, and I loved hearing all of his interesting stories.  He will greatly missed. -Deann Smith

I worked in surgery at BMC for many years and scrubbed cases for Dr. Boatman.  I learned alot from him. He had interesting, funny stories to tell but was quite professional.   He cared deeply for his patients.  One thing I learned from him was always keep a pair of scissors clean from the instrument tray for putting the dressing on the patient after the procedure. He would only use paper tape on the dressing because it was less caustic on the skin. He would cut the tape in even pieces saying" neat on the inside, neat on the outside".  If he was doing an exploratory lap, he would come in from the scrub sink, inquiring if we had a "full complement of retractors".  I could go on and on about my "Karlisms". But that would take too long. He was fiercely proud of his family and his love for them was evident.  He became a bit mushy after he became a grandfather and we teasingly called him "pawpaw ". I remember one Friday afternoon had been really hard. Towards the end of the shift, we were all ready to go home. Our supervisor asked if any of us was willing to stay and scrub an emergency appendectomy for him. We were all tired and everyone remained silent. Finally,  I said I would. I didn't want to let  one of my favorites down.  My kids were in daycare, waiting for me, but I stayed. In the procedure,  he was frantic. He needed to go to the airport to pick up his grandson who was flying from Houston by himself for the first time to visit his grandparents.  After the procedure,  he came back to the OR suite and hugged me and stuffed a $20.00 bill in my scrub top. I tried to give it back to him, telling him, I already was on the clock and I was glad he was going to be able to pick Cord up.  He still insisted I take his offer of gratitude and ended the conversation with his famous compliment "you are just a goddammed jewel. I'm sure when St. Peter greets him at the pearly gates, his welcome will not be so colorful, but along the same lines. God bless you in your sorrow.
