I think I was 21 when I worked for Mable at Mid-Continent Life Insurance Company 35 years (or so) ago.  We shared an office with Roy.  I can’t remember Roy’s last name—he had to be 107 years old.  Sweet old man.  He was always laughing and smiling— usually at something Mable had said or done.
Mable was the greatest boss, ever!!!   She was fun, easy-going, light-hearted, smart, funny, fun to be around, just FUN!   I mean, we worked, we definitely worked, but somehow it never seemed like work with Mable.
She was my mentor and I loved her so much.  To this day, I dream of going to see Mable— in my dreams, I usually go back to Mid-Continent where she still works, and, although the offices have been updated and re-decorated and she’s in another office now, she’s still doing accounting in those HUGE ledger books like we used to use.  Those were archaic even then.  Reading about her passing this morning makes me so sad that I never really did make those visits.  
But, she's never far from my mind and I tell 'Mable Thomson stories' to this day.  Just a few Sundays ago at church, I told the girl standing next to me, “I used to work for a lady and this was her FAVORITE hymn!”  We were singing “And He Walks With Me.”  As I predicted, she asked, “Why was it her favorite?”  I said, “She had a crush on a boy named Andy.”  “So?”  Just then the chorus breaks in and I sing, just as Mable sang it to me, “Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me, Andy tells me I am his own!”  I remember Mable telling me that she would actually request this song in church and the pastor would be ever so pleased with her, and even hold her up as an example to the youth of the church-- that a girl her age was interested enough to request a hymn!!  
And, who could forgot how to spell Mable’s last name?!?   She saw to that by explaining that it’s “Thomson without a “p”—like swimming pool."  I actually had to think about it!  She was hysterical! 
I remember her telling the story of a very thirsty Sarah when she was a toddler, taking a big ol’ drink of tea at a restaurant and loudly proclaiming (much to the chagrin of her parents), “I can drink the HELL out of this iced tea!”  My family still says that when we get a drink when we’re really thirsty- most of them don’t even know where it came from or why we say it.  I might add, we try not to say it loudly in restaurants, but we DO say it!  Mable read a book every day at lunch and ate only an apple, but told me she would eat an ENTIRE large pizza every Friday night by herself—she said she wouldn’t split it with anyone- she would eat every slice.  I never knew whether to believe that or not.  What I do believe is that Mable is the one that taught me to love to read.  She loaned me the first books in the "All Creatures Great & Small" series.  I hated to read before I met her.  What a gift.
We laughed for weeks when there was a news report of a man whose house was on fire, but there were so many fires in the area that the fire department actually told him they could not respond.  The reporter asked him, “And, what did you say when they told you they couldn’t come help you put out the fire?”  The man said thoughtfully, in a thick country drawl, “Well, I just said, I wish you woouuld.”  To this day my family fills many “Duh moments” with, “I wish you woouuld!”  And, when we do, I always think of Mable.
Mable cut out a newspaper clipping of a man who had stolen tons of money and gotten away with it.  She would NEVER have endorsed the stealing, of course, but she hung the clipping on the wall at work—she WAS impressed with his criminal mind, no doubt, but frankly, it was hung more to annoy/intimidate one of our bosses who was ever so condescending.  She was the Treasurer, after all, and I think she enjoyed making him nervous.
Although I never met her friends Mary and Jim, I felt like I knew them and I could tell Mable loved them and she was a great friend.
I remember the many stories of her girls and their husbands— Mable loved not only her daughters, but her sons-in-law as well.  I remember stories of Sarah, and of Ben.  How she loved her family- and, enjoyed them.
I’ll never forget her parting words to me at my wedding --with tears in her eyes— “I hope you have as much happiness with your Ben as I had with mine.”  I have.  And, I love her for speaking that blessing into me.  And, for so much more.  
I am so sorry that we have lost our wonderful Mable.  What a treasure; what a gift.  I am so sorry I will not be there to celebrate her going home, but I am so thankful to know I WILL see her again.  Until that time, hopefully, I will continue to dream about my friend, my mentor, my Mable.

My first memorys of Mable are from the time she came to help my mother when my brother Joe was born.  I would have been 4 and she about 12.  Her job was to keep me busy while mom cared for Joe.  We had some new chicken chicks, one died and we went down to a sandy spot back of the barn and had a service for the chick.  She was the big sister I didn't have when I was small.  I was so glad we had a chance to visit at the family reunion at Jims home a few years ago.  Mable you will be missed but, not forgotten until the last person who know you is gone.
