Mildred was born November 13, 1924 in Livingston TX to Dewitt Crockett Robinson and Mildred Ione Harness. She was the fourth of eight children which included six brothers: John, DC, Lester, Charles, Dan and Clinton and one sister, Annie.
Growing up, the family lived in several cities across Texas, including Livingston, Houston, Pasadena and League City. After high school, Mildred attended business school. In August of 1945, Mildred married D.H. Sanders, an Army Air Corpsman from Oklahoma City, who had been stationed at Bryan, Texas. After his tour of duty, they moved to Oklahoma City, where they had three children, Art, Bill and Cina. They divorced in May of 1957. Mildred then embarked upon a secretarial career, ultimately spending 30 years working for the Oklahoma State Employment Service and later the Oklahoma State Employment Security Commission. It was here she met the second love of her life, Jim Page, who preceded her in death in December 1985.
Mildred is survived by her brother Dan; her three children: Art Sanders and wife Sheri; Bill Sanders and wife Aloha; and Cina Sanders Gailey and husband Jim; seven grandchildren: Stacy Sanders, Steve Sanders, Michael Sanders, Jessica Gailey Gilmore and husband Joel; Dan Sanders and wife Angelia; David Sanders; and Abby Sanders Hart and husband Emerson; five great-grandchildren: Lane Holtmyer, Logan Holtmyer, Evan Gilmore, Caleb Gilmore and Blake Sanders; along with a host of nieces and nephews.
Among Mildred’s many loves was watching the birds she lured to her backyard with numerous feeders, houses and birdbaths. Every January, her spent Christmas tree found a new home on the patio, providing shelter for her wintering feathered friends. In the spring, her focus turned to gardening - her cucumbers and tomatoes were family favorites - and to tending the large pond in her backyard, home to a burgeoning school of goldfish and koi. Sports were at the forefront year-round. She rarely missed an opportunity to watch the Sooners, the Thunder, or a Sunday afternoon round of golf. She loved game shows as well, particularly Jeopardy, which she enjoyed watching on a regular basis with one of her grandsons. She often bragged that he would know the answer to the final Jeopardy question when those competing on the show didn’t.
Above all else, Mildred loved her family – her children, their spouses, grands and great-grands – unconditionally. She never missed a ball game, recital, concert, or graduation. She made certain every birthday was properly celebrated and every holiday observed with a full family gathering. Christmas was a particularly special time when she carefully unboxed dozens of Hallmark ornaments and – with the help first of her children, then her grandchildren, and eventually her great-grandchildren – decorated the tree. Every year each grand and great-grand has received a special ornament chosen just for them. The gift was always accompanied by a mint coin set, a stocking filled with fruit, nuts and favorite candies, as well as some all-important “spending cash”.
In 2018, Mildred transitioned to assisted living, moving to a Heaven House residence in April of that year. The family is so appreciative of the caregivers who treated her with such wonderful kindness and compassion during that time, most particularly as she neared the end of her life.
Mildred will be missed dearly by the many who loved her, but we will have her legacy of love, resilience, and generosity to see us through.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored for you to make a donation to your charity of choice in Mildred’s name.
