

Shields “Jerry” Maxwell, 78, passed away July 31, 2012. Jerry was born on August 14, 1933 in Banning California and was the first-born child of the late Shields John Maxwell and Isabelle Louise (Andrews) Maxwell from Brooklyn NY. His family made the journey from California to Oklahoma City in 1949.He graduated from Northeast High School in 1951. Jerry served his country in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Worcester CL- 144 and completed his duty in 1956. After his service, he returned to Oklahoma City and married his beloved wife of 55 years, Beverly Ann Harrell on May 5, 1957. In the late 1950’s, Jerry and his best friend Bob Carter, began a business partnership known as Carter-Maxwell Auto Service. Their love for working on sports cars carried over into sports car racing. After fine tuning their race cars throughout the weeknights, Bob, Jerry, and Jimmy Hawkins would spend most summer weekends at local race tracks around the area. Their success continued in the racing industry and they decided to take on another challenge with Goodyear Racing in 1964. The company expanded and became the racing tire distributor for Goodyear’s southwest region, which includes 13 states at this time. The business still thrives today as Carter-Maxwell Auto Service Inc. in Bethany, OK. He enjoyed watching the Speed Channel, and especially liked the Western Channel and John Wayne movies. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; son, David; daughter, Patricia; and sister, Blanche Maxwell. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughter, Lynda Maxwell of Bethany; son, Ron Maxwell and his wife Susan and their daughter; Madelyn of Bethany. His survivors also include two brothers, Bill Maxwell and his wife Ann of Edmond, Roger Maxwell and his wife Kathy of Arizona, and one sister, Susie Berning of California, and numerous nieces and nephews.The family would like to extend their thanks to all his friends, co-workers, and the entire racing community that touched him throughout his lifetime. Funeral services will be held at Guardian West Funeral Home, 5820 NW 41st Street, OKC, on August 6th at 2:00 p.m with Visitation beginning at 8-1 pm. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
