Susanne “Sue” Sullivan, 87, departed this life for her heavenly home on July 3rd, 2024. She was born on February 3rd, 1937 in Pilot Point, Texas. She grew up in Waco, Texas, then married the love of her life, Charles “Chuck” Sullivan, on March 26th, 1955.
As a family, they lived in Missouri, Delaware, Louisiana, and Mississippi. They moved to Oklahoma City in 1969, becoming proud Okies. She thanked God that He planted their family in Oklahoma.
Sue planned to become an investigative journalist but, she attended only one semester of college in Colorado before she and Chuck were married. She was a homemaker until they moved to Oklahoma where she earned her bachelor’s degree from Central State College aka University of Central Oklahoma. She planned to be an elementary teacher, but after substitute teaching, she realized this was not the path for her. Her new goal was to teach American History. She wanted to bring history to life; make it exciting and demonstrate how history influences our lives today. She taught American History at Putnam City Schools from 1970 to 1995. She retired in 1995, and was elected to the Putnam City School Board for four consecutive terms. Her priority as a teacher was always the students. She has been described as passionate, impactful, compassionate, a woman of integrity, and more than a bit of a prankster.
Sue was very proud of her family and enjoyed any and every activity she did with them. They enjoyed family vacations, such as visiting with family and going on adventures, including camping with Chuck and the children. She was the pillar of the family and provided such strength to them all. After retirement, Chuck and Sue enjoyed national and international travel with several clubs.
While she kept busy with her family and teaching she was also an avid bridge player and gardener. She enjoyed her church family, her Bible study groups, and was a devoted Christian. Sue was a strong believer in our democracy. She was notorious for helping many people register to vote. She was a long-time election official at voting sites. She was also a member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), but her long-time passion was genealogy.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband Chuck, her mother Lee Buzick, her father Loyd Laughlin, and brothers Ron Buzick, Larry Buzick, and Jones Laughlin. She was also preceded in death by her adopted parents, Joe and Ruth Voigt.
She is survived by her children Paul (Lori) Sullivan; Steve (Linda) Sullivan; and Karen (Blair) Hoey; granddaughters Tara (Adrian) Savedra; Tiffany (Chase) Mason; and Stacy (Benjamin) Stall; and great- grandchildren A. J. and Arman Savedra; Ava, Ani and Alivia Mason; and Amelia and Charles Stall. Other survivors include sisters-in-law dona love Sullivan and Shirley Montoya Buzick; Tom Laughlin; sister, Judy Rue; and cousin, Susan McHorse.
She wanted us to remember these things: Serve God not ourselves. God will not forsake or leave you; He is always there. Enjoy life. Laugh and Reach for the stars!
