Susie Styron was a drama queen, and proud of it. An air of theatre followed her; to a family Christmas party, a classroom outing, cocktails with colleagues. Susie was pint-sized in stature, yet dominated a room. Colorful and kind, she was equal parts Krystle Carrington, Blanche Dubois, and Mother Teresa. In her nearly 35 years of teaching, Mrs. Styron used drama to show thousands of kids that if they could imagine it, they could achieve it; they are her proudest legacies.
Susie taught at Taft Middle School from 1990 to her retirement in 2012. The Oklahoma City Public Schools honored her as “Excellent Educator of the Year” for 2003-2004, and she is recognized in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” She also taught at Bishop John Carroll and in the Faucett, Missouri school system. Susie attended St. Gregory’s College in Shawnee and graduated from Central State University in Edmond, where she made life-long friends.
Susie loved her sweet husband Mike, her beautiful sisters Mary Lynne and Diane, Chicago, champagne, eight-finger cavatelli, and especially her family of students and staff at Taft Middle School.
Susie was blessed with dear, dear friends who kept her laughing through challenging times, and she and her family are forever grateful to Martha Roller and Jackie Younge for feeding her spirit and sharing her life.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents Dolores and Bill Tyrrell, and by her beloved husband of 36 years, Mike Styron. She is survived by her loving sisters, Diane Henry and Mary Lynne Hladik, and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of Susie’s life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 8701 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City, OK 73162.
Friends at Taft Middle School will install a memorial bench in Susie’s honor. Donations should be payable to Martha Roller, and mailed c/o “Susan Styron Memorial Bench Fund” to 8309 NW 105th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73162.
