Born on September 6th, 1956, in Oklahoma City, she was the eldest of three siblings, to her beloved parents, Ken and Barbara Piland. She grew up in Oklahoma City and graduated from Putnam City High School.
Valerie continued her education at The University of Oklahoma where she earned a bachelor’s degree in interior design and was a proud member of Delta Gamma. Valerie had various careers over the years, but ultimately found her true calling in the fitness industry. Valerie was a passionate and inspiring instructor, especially to the Silver Sneakers, and dedicated personal trainer to many who became her close friends.
When Valerie wasn't in the gym, she was usually staying active elsewhere, often walking her dogs through Nichols Hills. Valerie always carried a love for tennis, having learned the game playing with her dad at the Sante Fe Club. She was a proud teammate and captain of the Volley Starz and Wise Aces, travelling and competing with her teammates and friends.
Valerie’s energy extended beyond fitness. She loved travelling, dancing, going to concerts, spending time at the lake, gardening, reading, going to the movies, sipping decaf lattes, and laying in the sun. Her greatest joys were her family, friends, and community. Valerie was deeply involved in Oklahoma City philanthropy and was proud to support several organizations, including Pivot OKC, HopeHouse OKC, and was an active member of The Vine Community Church.
Valerie married Jeffrey Martin Oakley on May 2nd, 1987. Together they raised two children in Oklahoma City. She is survived by her children, Lauren (Charles Colver) and Alex (Shelby); Grandchildren, Tripp and Rowan Oakley, and Charlie Colver; Brothers Mike (Kathy) Piland, and Richard Piland; Uncle James Piland; her crazy dog, Maizey, and many extended family members. Valerie was predeceased by parents, Kenneth and Barbara Piland.
Valerie was a vibrant and caring soul and she will be sincerely missed by all. She lived a wonderful, fulfilling, and active life to the very end. She was a brave fighter of glioblastoma (brain cancer). She was diagnosed in June 2024, undergoing extensive and aggressive treatment before succumbing to the disease. The family would love to support anyone else who is affected by this cancer.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Jennifer, a wonderful caretaker turned friend, and to all those who offered love, meals, flowers, and support through Valerie’s journey. Your kindness did not go unnoticed.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Pivot OKC on behalf of Valerie.
