

He graduated from Shawnee High School in May 1955. He served in the U.S Army from 1960-1962.
On August 10, 1963, he married Sherrill Gay. They were married for over 61 years. They welcomed two sons, Michael in 1965 and Kevin in 1967. He built his own house where his widow still resides.
He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church for over 50 years where he taught Sunday School for many years and drove the church van and was ordained as a deacon in 2012. He was currently a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Walter worked at Tinker Air Force Base for over 30 years where he finished his career as a missile systems Equipment Specialist. He retired in 1993.
After his retirement, he and his brother-in-law, Richard Gay, took over management of a herd of Registered Angus Cattle which was started by his father-in- law, Marion Gay. He enjoyed working with his hands and could fix almost anything.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Marie Yort, his siblings, Marcine Storie, Betty Storie, Don Yort, Shirley Monroe, Bobby Yort, and Danny Yort.
He is survived by his wife, Sherrill, of the home, his son and daughter in law, Michael and Randi Yort of Shawnee, and his son, Kevin Yort of Norman. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Brianna Johns of Glenpool, and his grandson Kristopher Yort of Shawnee, and two great-granddaughters, Evie Johns and Reagan Johns of Glenpool.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025 at 2pm at Temple Baptist Church, 1234 E Highland St, Shawnee, OK 74801.
