William Michael “Mike” Six was born on July 3rd, 1954, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Roy and Billie Jeannie Six. Shortly after his birth, he moved with his family to California, where he spent his early childhood before permanently returning to Oklahoma in 1970.
After graduating from high school in 1971, Mike joined the United States Marine Corps, where he was selected to attend the U.S Army Flight School. He later served with the Marine Expeditionary Force aboard the helicopter assault carrier U.S.S Iwo Jima. Mike also assisted in troop withdrawal efforts from Vietnam. Upon returning stateside, he was selected for the Marine Corps’ Platoon Leaders Class and attended the University of Oklahoma, where he studied engineering and worked toward receiving his commission as a Marine Corps Officer. During his sophomore year of college, he made the decision to separate from the Marine Corps and pursue his calling in law enforcement.
Mike began his police career in 1976 in Piedmont, later moving to Mustang before finding his home in the Midwest City Police Department, where he retired after nearly 30 years of dedicated service to the City of Midwest City. During his time in the force, he participated in numerous rescue missions, including responding to the Murrah Building Bombing in 1995 as well as assisting rescue operations during the May 3rd, 1999, F5 tornado that impacted Midwest City.
Mike also served as a K9 officer with his loyal and beloved K9 partner, Spirit, who worked by his side until Spirit’s passing in 1984. Mike played a key role in implementing the Community Based Policing Program, a contribution that continues to positively shape the community.
Outside of patrol, Mike was a nationally certified D.A.R.E instructor and a graduate of National Crime Prevention at the University of Louisville, where he finished top of his class. He served as a federal instructor for DUI and Field Sobriety testing. While serving as a Police Officer, he earned his degree in Criminal Justice and Police Science. In recent years, he served as Assistant State, State and Regional Director for MUFON.
A perfect day for Mike was a slow morning on the back porch with a cup of coffee and his dog Griffin by his side, brainstorming his next project or adventure. His mind was always thinking, dreaming and always creating.
Mike would want to be remembered as someone who was loyal to those he loved and ambitious towards his dreams and goals. He was a family man, who would always do what was best for them. A friend who would always lend a listening ear and help solve any issues they may have. Someone who always had the craziest stories and a sense of humor that can only be described if you knew him. Fortunately, his children did not fall very far from the tree in that respect. They even joke that they are still on the tree. It is safe to say that they will continue to carry on the many great traits and of course some of the craziness that Mike has instilled in them.
Mike is survived by his wife of 29 years, DeiDre’ whom he married on July 19, 1996. His son Jeff Six and spouse Camie of Yukon, OK, and their children Reese and Korbin. Daughter Samantha and spouse Chris McKitrick of Piedmont, OK, and their children Olivia and Teddy. Daughter Claire Six and spouse Ashtin of Oklahoma City, OK and their child Colsen.
Mike is preceded in death by his father Roy Six, his mother Jeannie Bethers and stepfather Alvin Bethers, his brother Christopher, and his Aunt Pauline and Uncle Raymond, who helped raise him.
As we know, he was a simple man. He enjoyed the smaller things in life. Spending time with his best buddy, Griffin, traveling, nights out at the casino and working on his next new idea. Above all, he enjoyed quality time with his wife, his children and his grandchildren, who were his greatest joy.
