Elizabeth “Peggy” Lux, 87, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. She was born on April 26, 1938, in McAlester, Oklahoma. She was called Peggy from a young age, and when people asked where the nickname came from, she would always reply, “You’ll have to ask my dad.” The full story was never known, except that he liked the name.
Peggy lived in Wichita for most of her life, where her family attended Christ the King Catholic Church. When her children were young, she enthusiastically volunteered as a Cub Scout leader for her sons and later as a Girl Scout leader for her daughters, always ensuring crafts were part of every meeting. While her children attended Christ the King School, Peggy helped as a lunchroom volunteer. She later returned to school herself, earning a degree in Secretarial Sciences from the University of Tulsa and Benedictine Heights College.
She then enjoyed a long and successful career as a legal secretary in Wichita, retiring in 2007. Peggy often practiced her remarkable typing skills at home using the newspaper and was known as a trustworthy and loyal employee. She could type over 80 words per minute and was selected to help implement the original IBM computer system at her law firm, where she was responsible for training all the legal secretaries on how to use it.
Throughout her time in Wichita, Peggy was active in the Altar Society at Christ the King Church. She assisted with events such as serving the priests, preparing lunches and dinners, helping at funerals, and participating in the annual fundraiser, Fun Night. After moving to Olathe in 2009, she became a devoted member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church.
Peggy was a talented seamstress, and she nurtured a lifelong passion for arts and crafts. She made ball gowns for police balls, matching Christmas dresses for her daughters, and nearly all of their elementary school clothing. Her creativity extended into her later years through knitting and crocheting afghans for charities and making everything from wreaths to imaginative dollar bill arrangements for her grandchildren.
A true fashion enthusiast, she loved anything that sparkled, especially her favorite bling earrings. Peggy also enjoyed collecting cookbooks and experimenting with recipes, making everything from candies and beloved crockpot peanuts to her famous mostaccioli pasta salad. She delighted in playing bingo, cheering on the Chiefs, keeping up with celebrity gossip, and taking trips and drives with her children.
Peggy’s greatest joy was spending time with her eight grandchildren. She loved celebrating milestones like buying cars, starting new jobs, attending classes and graduations, meeting new pets, and simply hearing about their daily adventures. She loved camping trips with her youngest child’s family, exploring the countryside in their motor home. Peggy also cherished family dinners at her children’s homes, especially when grilling or smoking meats, or whenever the Chiefs were playing.
Peggy is survived by her son, Larry Lux (Dianne), and her daughters, Mary Smith and Sheri Addis (Brian). She cherished eight grandchildren: Nathan Lux, Marissa Lux-Vulgamore (Parker), and Austin Lux; Caitlin Smith, George Brandon Smith, and Charles Brett Smith; Ryan Addis and Blake Addis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bessie Clellan Dickman and Bernard Dickman; two sisters, Betty Jean Herbeck (Gene) and Dorothy Carroll (John); one son, Gary Lux; and her friend and former husband, George Lux.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 20, at 9:30 a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Olathe, Kansas. The Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. Burial and interment will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, at Resurrection Cemetery in Wichita, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Elizabeth Lux for the House of Formation Catholic Diocese of Wichita, Office of Development, 424 N Broadway, Wichita, KS 67202.
