Gerald Cyril Saale, a beloved husband, father, papa, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, at the age of 84, due to complications from multiple myeloma. He was born on June 1, 1941, in St. Charles, Missouri, the son of Cyril and Hazel (Borchardt) Saale. Gerald's departure leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his dear sister, June (Saale) Horn. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Judy Saale, daughter Jani North Saale (Jessica), and son Jeff Saale (Courtney). Gerald’s legacy will live on through his cherished grandchildren: Olivia, Elle, Griffin, Bennett (Saale), and Laila North. He is also survived by his brother Jim Saale (Mary Ann), brother-in-law Joe Ensch, several nieces and nephews, as well as his extended family, including the Millers: Dave, Desi, Shawn, Travis, Max, and Abbey. Gerald’s many lifelong friends, who he regarded as family, will also remember him fondly.
In March of 1973, Jerry met the love of his life, Judy Ensch, daughter of Truman and Marjorie Ensch from St. Paul, Kansas. Their love story blossomed quickly, and they were married on September 8, 1973. They celebrated 52 wonderful years of marriage just last month, filled with laughter, travel, and cherished memories.
Jerry's educational journey began at St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School, leading him to graduate from St. Peter's High School in 1959. He further pursued his education at Southeast Missouri State University, graduating in May of 1963. Shortly thereafter, in January 1964, he began his service in the United States Air Force, where he dedicated two years of his life to his country.
After his military service, Jerry embarked on a successful career with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), where he worked as an audit manager until his retirement at the age of 57. He approached every challenge with diligence and integrity, earning the respect of his colleagues and the gratitude of those he served.
Jerry was a self-taught aficionado and the quintessential go-to guy for computers, both personally and professionally. He embraced the internet and technology with enthusiasm, creating the website WorldWorryWarts.com to showcase his passions for travel and photography long before social media became commonplace.
Traveling was one of Jerry's greatest joys. When his children were young, the family embarked on annual road trips across the United States every summer. They created lasting memories at the beloved A-frame house in Breckenridge, which they visited in both summer and winter. After Judy’s retirement in January 2000, their adventures expanded globally, with travels to England, Paris, Lithuania, Vienna, China, Italy, the Galapagos Islands, Hungary, Peru, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia, including a breathtaking safari through Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Throughout these journeys and in his daily life, Jerry was often seen with a camera in hand, documenting every moment with an artist’s eye. He delighted in capturing the beauty of the world around him, and his grandchildren were his favorite subjects. Olivia, his first grandchild, was particularly fortunate, with Jerry photographing her hundreds of times during her first year.
Jerry was also known for his practical skills, often tackling home projects with confidence. He refinished an old farmhouse, finished a basement for both his son and his daughter, and built an envy worthy deck where many family meals were shared, showcasing his talent and love for his family.
A creature of comfort, Jerry enjoyed starting each day watching Morning Joe and was always eager to discuss the latest episode of Survivor. He cherished listening to audiobooks during his dialysis sessions, often sharing insights from his latest listen with his son, Jeff. Known for his love of comfort, Jerry appreciated his collection of adidas pants and plaid flannel shirts, with Judy ensuring he had one in every available pattern.
As a devoted Papa, Jerry's happiest moments were spent surrounded by his grandchildren, whom he adored. He took immense pride in their individuality and cherished their thoughts about the world, fostering deep connections with each of them.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or a cause that resonates with your heart, honoring Jerry’s spirit of giving.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the amazing staff at Fresenius, where Jerry spent three days a week. He treasured his time there, looking forward to their warm camaraderie and often jokingly racing to take his seat, delighting in the friendly banter of “Slow down, Jerry.”
Jerry Saale will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his generosity, love of life, and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of all who knew him. Rest in peace, dear Jerry. Your legacy of love, laughter, and adventure will continue to inspire and guide us.
