Melba R. Hughes

Melba R. Hughes, 81, of Olathe, Kansas passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, January 22, 2018. She will forever be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to everyone she met.

Melba was born on September 3, 1936 in Emma Missouri to Edward William and Lena (Lange) Schelp. She attended and graduated from Missouri School for the Deaf, Fulton, MO in 1954. She married the love of her life, Eugene C. Hughes on September 11, 1954. Through this union together they raised their four children, Bonnie, Patty, Mary and Billy.

Melba is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Lena Schelp, her husband of 49 years, Eugene C. Hughes who passed away in 2004 along with several of her siblings.

Melba is survived by her children, Bonnie Kay Kramer and her husband Lee of Ijamsville, Maryland, Patricia (Patty) Ann Hughes of Valencia, California, Mary Jean Hughes of Olathe, Kansas and William (Billy) Eugene Hughes and his wife Rena of Boyds, Maryland. Left behind to cherish her memory are her eight grandchildren, Ethan Kramer, Dalton Kramer, Jake Culligan, Iris Culligan, Paul (Chala) Daniels, Shana (Ash) Daniels Sever, Calvin Hughes and Kalista Hughes. She will be sadly missed by her two great grandchildren, Kaylan Daniels and Kylie Daniels. Melba is also survived by her three brothers, Harold Schelp and his wife Zola of Olathe, Kansas, Warner Schelp of Higginsville, Missouri and Edgar Schelp of Lee Summit, Missouri.

Melba will be cremated according to her wishes. A memorial service in her honor will take place at Evergreen Community of Johnson County, Friday January 26 at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in memory of Melba R. Hughes to: Evergreen Community of Johnson County 11875 South Sunset Drive Olathe, Kansas 66061.
