Nancy Arlene Young

Nancy Arlene Young (Barnes), 92, of Bucyrus, Kansas, passed away in her home on Wednesday, April 19, 2023. She will forever be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Nancy was born on January 23, 1931, in Topeka, Kansa, as the only child to Ruth Elborn Barnes (Stalons) and Jared Pierpont Barnes. She graduated from Olathe High School, class of 1948. She met the love of her life, William Garland Young, on August 16, 1947. They were married on March 25, 1950, in Olathe, Kansas. Together they raised their three children, Craig, Kent, and Nanette.

Nancy was an ardent fan of everything her grandchildren did. She was a ferocious Old Maid card player, saw all the Disney princess movies at least twice, believed Barbie needed a car and a dream house, and frequented toy stores and book stores without provocation. She kept a well-stocked pantry of snacks and was quick to administer foo-foo dust on a moment’s notice to fix any problem that was presented to her. Generous to all those she loved, she had a special place in her heart for the married-ins and was quick to adopt them into the clan.

Happiest when her family was all together, she showed them the world, passing down to each generation her love of travel and new places, while reminding them that revisiting places like Williamsburg is as necessary as breathing.

Nancy is preceded in death by her husband, William Garland Young, her parents, Ruth Elborn Barnes (Stalons) and Jared Pierpont Barnes and grandson-in-law, Lawrence P. Henderson.

She is survived by her two sons, William Craig Young and his wife Debbe of Overland Park, Kansas, Steven Kent Young and his wife Clista of The Villages, Florida, and one daughter Nanette Lundgren and her husband Dave of Overland Park, Kansas. She will be greatly missed by her six grandchildren: Heather Ventura (and spouse Stephen Ventura Jr), Ruth Sigler (and spouse Jerry Sigler), Jason Young Lundgren (and spouse Mikey Lundgren), Jennifer Johnson (and spouse Jeffery Johnson), Brittan Young-Henderson, and Cole Young. She will be sadly missed by her six great grandchildren: Connor Ventura, Katherine Sigler, Olivia Sigler, Sophia Sigler, Bridget Young Henderson, and Genevieve Young Henderson.  

A visitation for Nancy will be held Wednesday, April 26, 2023 from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM at McGilley & Frye Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 105 E. Loula Street, Olathe, KS 66061, followed by a funeral from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 105 E. Loula Street, Olathe, KS 66061. She will be laid to rest at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, 9501 West 159th St. Overland Park, KS, Overland Park, KS 66221.
