He was born on April 28, 1929, to Florence Robinson where he attended public schools in Olathe, Kansas, and Barter school in Topeka, Kansas. Prentis later married the love of his life, Evelyn (Cartwright) Bates. That beautiful matrimony lasted for 70-plus years until his death. Throughout his lifetime he joined the United States Army for a stint of 2 years. Upon the completion of his Army career, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where his service lasted for 20 years. During his service career, he received the Korean Service Medal, 2 Bronze Service Stars, and several letters of recognition and certificates. After his service career, Prentis worked at Delco Battery Plant in Olathe, Kansas. He was considered a goodwill ambassador in his own right. Prentis would visit anyone at homes, hospitals, nursing homes, or anywhere a friend or loved one might be. He was known as Gunny by everyone because of his drill instructor days with the Marines. He was stern but loving.
Prentis was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Robinson; sisters: Delores Robinson, Billie Graham, and Shirley Bell; brothers, Delbert Robinson and Thomas Bates.
He is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn (Cartwright) Bates; Clifford Cartwright (Arnita) of Fort Worth, Texas; Earl Cartwright (Jimmie) of Olathe, Kansas; Albert Robinson (Nette) of Olathe, Kansas; Dale Robinson (Lana) of Olathe, KS; Gregory Robinson of Olathe, Kansas; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many other family and friends.
A visitation for Prentis will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2022, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at McGilley & Frye Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 105 E. Loula Street, Olathe, KS 66061. A graveside service will occur Wednesday, June 1, 2022, from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Rd., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
