She was born in Vermillion, Kansas on April 12, 1929 to Floyd Towne Curtis and Nettie Ellen (Mann) Curtis. She attended school in Vermillion, graduating from high school in May of 1947. During high school, she met the man of her dreams, Richard Francis “Dude” Volle. They were married on May 25, 1947 in Vermillion. She worked in various jobs, including being a civilian employee of the Army in Leavenworth, Kansas. She was self employed for some time, taking in ironings so she could be at home with her small children after her husband passed. She worked for Hyer Boot Company for many years as a clerk and later as a computer operator.
When Hyer Boot was acquired by Capitol Equities, she continued to work for them as a computer operator. At one time she worked for House of Lloyd and she finished her working years at JC Penney Distribution Center in Lenexa, Kansas in their accounting department. While working at JC Penney, Ruth decided to go to college to learn more about accounting. She attended Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. After retiring, Ruth did babysitting, taking care of her youngest grandson from 2 months of age to 2 years old.
Ruth was very much about family. When her daughter, Linda, needed someone to help her raise her children, Ruth stepped in and raised them as her own. Nate was so proud of his grandmother, when he was in scouts, he would volunteer her to drive for outings and she enjoyed it immensely. The family didn't have much in those days, but she stretched her money and provided for all 5 children on a single woman's salary. Ruth spent many years of her retirement traveling in her Minnie Winnie Winnebago. She spent ten Winters in Donna, Texas at Big Valley Trailer Park. She made some good friends there and was always quick to tell you how well the locals treated the Winter Texans. While she was in Texas, she enjoyed crocheting afghans for her family. She also crocheted layette sets for the babies being born around her. She volunteered making quilts for the orphanage in the area, and enjoyed going to lunch and dinner with friends from the trailer park. She also enjoyed many trips to Mexico for shopping and one trip to Monterey, Mexico on a tour.
