Stanley L. Wheat, 84, of Stonewall, OK, passed from this life into eternity on the evening of November 10, 2023. He had a long life filled with service and devotion to the Lord, a large and loving family, and a peaceful end.
Stanley was born on June 21, 1939, to Walter Stanley Wheat and Ruby Grace Killam Wheat in Shelbyville, IL, and grew up in his boyhood home of Clarksburg, IL. Because his father went by Stanley, he was known as Lewis to those east of the Mississippi, but went by Stan when he moved to Kansas. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He had an interest in preaching, journalism, photography, writing and farming. He tried his hand at several of these before settling in as a technical writer at Bendix in Kansas City, MO. After a long career there, Stan retired with his wife to his dream acreage at Hillsdale Lake. Those who knew him well will remember him for his love of hunting, fishing, gardening and mushroom hunting. Stan was most at home when he was outdoors, puttering around in the woods or his garden. Those who knew him best will remember the hilarious stories told around family dinner tables and smoky campfires. He passed on his love of the outdoors and his knowledge to his children and grandchildren, but left his mushroom hunting map as a treasure to be discovered.
Stan married Dorothy Beth Anderson on February 20, 1965 and they had 58 wonderful years together. Surviving Stan are his wife, Dorothy; their children, Tammy Grace Horton (Greg) of Stonewall, OK, Rachel Ruth Stritzke (Todd) of La Vernia, TX, Kevin Lewis Wheat of Olathe, KS and Lisa Beth Schlientz (Rocky) of Hartsburg, MO; brother Larry L. Wheat (Janet) of Marietta, GA; and grandchildren Timothy (Cassi), Brian (Heather), Jordan (Eric), Hunter, Laura (Garrett), Carolyn, Sarah, Sydney, Conner, Mattia and Michael; and his great-grandchildren, Jayde, Mia and Nolan. He is preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Leroy D. Wheat, his sister, Nancy M. Hostetler, and his grandson Adam L. Carroll.
Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17, at McGilley & Frye Funeral Home in Olathe, KS. Funeral services will be held at Antioch Community Baptist Church in Spring Hill, KS on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Jack Smith presiding. Burial will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Overland Park, KS after the service, with a lunch immediately following at Antioch Community Baptist Church. Flowers can be sent to McGilley & Frye funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Antioch Community Baptist Church building fund in Stanley’s name.
