He was born on August 5, 1950, in Kansas City, Missouri, to E. Vernon and Alice Helm. He was a lifelong resident of Johnson County, and lived in Olathe, KS since he was five. He graduated from Olathe High School, in 1968. Later, he served in the Army Reserves.
Bud retired from Dakota Inc, where he supervised the finishing of new homes and the warranty maintenance, afterward. For many years, after he retired, he spent the summers mowing lawns for a large number of people.
He met with a breakfast group, at HyVee, for many years, until he wasn't able to attend any longer. He enjoyed the friendship of all of the guys. He never knew a stranger and had an outgoing and friendly personality, and he would do anything that he could for someone in need.
He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Vernon and Mary Alice Helm. He is survived by his sister, Sharon Young, nephew, Kent Young and wife, Kammra, niece, Jacquie Young Collins and husband Doug, and six great nieces and nephews.
Also grieving for him is his friend since childhood, Tony Plunkett, his wife Gayle, Tony's family, and Sandy Moore Poland, who was a childhood neighbor and basically another sister.
Bud was married to Charlene Palmer in the 80s and years later had a soul mate, Mary Haines, who passed away in 2013.
He joined the Olathe 1st Ward, Olathe, Kansas Stake, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in July, 2020.
There will be a Celebration of Life at a future date, which will be announced, later.
