Donald was born to John Harry Metz and Hilda Frances (Cooper) Metz on November 21, 1953 in Spartanburg, South Carolina; the youngest of three sons.
In 1969, Donald, along with his family, relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where he graduated from Robert E. Lee (now Riverside) High School and went on to earn his bachelor's degree in construction engineering from the University of Florida. In the years to come, Donald would marry, have two children, and progress through his professional career while earning an MBA from the University of North Florida.
From there he became an entrepreneur, founding and operating multiple businesses in both building design and construction as well as professional computer software training. In 1996, he divorced and shortly after relocated to Old Hickory, Tennessee, where he joined his extended family. Donald became a professor of finance at the University of Phoenix and simultaneously began his transition into an author who would go on to publish many books including short stories, novels, cookbooks, and those on architectural design.
Donald‘s creativity seemed to know no limits and his love spanned higher than the moon and the stars. Throughout his life, he was a musician, an artist, a storyteller, a teacher, a leader, a mentor, a friend, and his proudest role of father. He held a strong sense of the common good with a passion for community and a commitment to political awareness. He was brilliant, strong, funny, and courageous, and he inspired so many.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents, John Harry Metz and Hilda Frances (Cooper) Metz. He is survived by his children, Matthew Tyler Metz and Katherine Vanessa (Metz) Zumbahlen along with his older brothers Richard Metz and Steven Metz.
