Homer Stanley Ferguson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and lifelong scholar, passed away leaving behind a legacy of warmth, intellectual curiosity, and an unwavering love for his family.
Born in Austin, Texas, to Tolbert Stanley Ferguson and Eula Mae Childress, Homer carried the spirit of the Lone Star State with him throughout his life. His journey took a cinematic turn when he traveled to Dores do Rio Preto, Brazil, where he met the woman who would become the center of his world: Marina. The two were married in São José do Calçado, beginning a beautiful partnership that spanned nearly 60 years. To Homer, Marina wasn't just his wife; she was truly the love of his life.
A man of deep intellect and compassion, Homer was a graduate of Baylor University and earned his Master’s in Social Work from the University of South Carolina. He was a true scholar who never stopped seeking knowledge. His linguistic talents were particularly remarkable; he spoke Portuguese with the fluency of a native and was proficient in Spanish. Even in his free time, he could be found studying French and Russian, driven by a lifelong passion for learning.
When he wasn’t buried in a book, Homer was likely cheering—loudly—for his favorite teams. As a dedicated Texas Longhorn and Dallas Cowboys fan, he spent countless hours watching games with his son, Charles. Their shared passion for football was legendary; it’s a wonder the neighbors didn’t call in a noise complaint every time there was a fumble or a touchdown.
Despite his academic interests, Homer’s greatest priority was always his family. He was a beloved father to Elizabeth, Charles, and Stan, always finding time to be present for their milestones. He also took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to Nathanael and Gabriella.
Homer is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Charles Ferguson and Phyllis Thomas. He is survived by his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren, as well as his siblings David Mehrer, Barbara Wood, and Kendra Heald, who will all miss his brilliant mind and gentle heart.
