

Lawrence D. Bodkins, age 80, passed away on Friday, August 15, 2014, at McKendree Village in Hermitage, TN. He was born on July 20, 1934, to Oscar William and Jessie Sponaugle Bodkin, who preceded him in death. He was raised in Tucker County, (Parsons), WV. He was twice married. First, to the former Barbara Stumbo of Texas, then, on December 22, 1966, in Oakland, MD, he was married to the former Sarah K. (Kathy) Bolyard, who survives . He graduated high school while serving in the United States Air Force. One highlight of his service was standing honor guard for President Dwight D. Eisenhower. After completing military service, Lawrence moved to Akron, OH, where his musical talent led him to become part of a band that was often hired to back famous country music artists at Bob’s Lake. Upon returning to WV, Lawrence obtained his dye certification while working for Dorman Mills in Parsons. He, along with other musical artists from the WV area, taped radio shows that were played on stations in Elkins, and Fisher, WV, among others. He was also employed for a time with Kingsford Charcoal, and along with his family, he owned and operated K & L Grocery on Quality Hill in Parsons. Lawrence moved with his wife and daughters to the Nashville, TN area in 1986, where he resided until his death. His hobbies included camping, fishing, music, and working with wood. Some of his most treasured moments in life were spent enjoying time with his family and friends.
Lawrence is also survived by his four children: Robert (Linda) Bodkins of League City, TX, Cheryl (William J. “Jim”) Sadler, Jr., of Roanoke, TX, Steven (Samran) Bodkins of Warner Robins, GA, and Pamela Bodkins of Hermitage, TN, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Three sisters, Hilda Williams of Parsons, WV, Arlene Deets of Hambleton, WV, and Lucille Simmons of Weekie Watchie, FL.
Lawrence’s wishes for cremation were honored. Visitation with the family will be Friday, August 29, 2014, from Noon – 3:00p.m at 208 Juarez Drive, in Hermitage, TN. Visitation with family will also be held on Monday, September 1, 2014, from noon – 4:00p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Parsons, WV, A private graveside service with Pastor Jeff Haynes officiating, will be held for all family on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at 11:00a.m. Final interment will be in the Parsons City Cemetery in Parsons, WV.
