Irene was born on July 16, 1935. As a young girl, her family moved frequently and she spent time in Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee. While middle Tennessee was her home for much of her life, she enjoyed traveling to Missouri to visit her extended family. Irene worked at Dupont for many years. Following her retirement from Dupont, she opened a septic tank business, T&W, with her husband. They successfully ran this business in Lebanon, Tennessee, until their joint retirement.
Irene never met a stranger and her love for others was evident to all who were lucky to know her. Irene helped and cared for countless people in her life, and she would have given her last dollar to anyone in need. She loved to cook large meals for her family and friends and was happiest when surrounded by loved ones. Irene made every day meaningful for others, but she especially enjoyed the holidays. Christmas time at her house was a joyous occasion full of love, laughter, and delicious food. Irene also enjoyed reading, playing cards and games with family and friends, game shows, visiting the river boat to play her favorite slot machines, and taking care of anyone who would let her. Over the years, she adopted many friends, employees, and colleagues into her family. Irene loved telling stories and could make anyone laugh. She made everyone feel as if they belonged to her and her presence filled the room with happiness and peace. She was deeply loved and will be incredibly missed by all.
Irene is preceded in death by her mother and father, Bertha and Tom Sims; brother, Gene Sims; stepson, Tony Thurman; nephew, Tommy Sims, and son-in-law, Alan Shaffield.
