Norma entered eternal rest on December 9, 2021. On September 8, 1933, she was born in Old Hickory, Tennessee, to the late Allene Andrews and Cornelius Hunt (Joe) Fleming. She is predeceased by her loving husband Lewis W. Hayes, her brother, Glendon C. Fleming, and the father of her children, William E. (Gene) Gober. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren survive her, Melanie Gober Grand (Paul), Miriam Thompson (Mike), Michael E. Gober (Laurie); grandchildren Hunt Thompson (Regina), Lacy Musser (Andrew), Stephen Grand, Katie Thompson, and Philip Grand; great-grandchildren, Jesse, Nadja’ Lyn, Quinn and Lena Musser and Hayes Thompson.
Norma was an honor graduate of Isaac Litton High School class of 1951. Upon graduation from high school, she attended Belmont College. Norma rode the city bus from Madison to Nashville for several years, where she worked at Bransford Sharp Insurance Company, located on Church Street. She and her co-workers enjoyed shopping in The Arcade during their lunch hours. In 1952, Norma married Gene and became the wife of a Methodist minister for 29 years. Norma continued to work at Bransford Sharp until Melanie was born in 1957. She devoted decades to raising her family, leading her children by example as a Brownie Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother, and teaching Sunday School. For many years, she volunteered her time working in the church offices of the churches Gene pastored in the middle TN area. Norma was always friendly and kind to everyone she met.
In 1979, Norma re-entered the workforce and became an administrative assistant at the Tennessee Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In the early ‘80’s she became an administrative assistant at The Hospitality House before her retirement in 1998. Norma was a devoted daughter to her parents during those years, visiting them daily and overseeing their care.
While serving on high school reunion committees, Norma was reunited with a friend whom she had known since they were children. Lewis Hayes became her best friend, confidant, and husband. They traveled across the United States during their years together, hiking and sightseeing. They shared their love of hiking and nature with the grandchildren. Lewis was devoted to Norma, and she to him. They were indeed in love and had more fun in their short time of 21 years together than many couples have in over 50 years.
Norma spent the last several years living in Bellevue and often visited her family members. She made wonderful friends and enjoyed her life at The Village at Bellevue.
The family would like to thank staff at The Village at Bellevue for their loving care over the last four and half years, with special thanks to the friendship and devotion of Luann Turkalj and Rebecca Capps. Norma received exceptional medical care from Corry Paul at NP Housecalls. Her Alive Hospice Care Team of Mandy, Emilie, Mona and Cindy helped the family to ensure Norma received a dignified and, peaceful passing.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:15 pm, followed by graveside services in Hermitage Memorial Gardens at 2:30. Services will be conducted by David (Buckey) Hesson, former associate pastor at Lebanon United Methodist Church.
