Barbara Helen "Sis" Blackwell, of Haddam, and formerly of Lyme, CT, passed away on June 7, 2021. She was the widow of Dennis Blackwell.

She was born on June 11, 1924, in Essex, the daughter of Henry and Annie Monroe.

Barbara, "The Old Bat" was a founding member of the Lymes' Senior Center and was their volunteer of the year in 2018. She was their Matriarch and always greeted anyone who was new that came to the center. She would always make new commers feel welcome. The center was her home away from home and she enjoyed every day she was there, and helped in any way she could. Barbara also volunteered for the battered women’s shelter, Safe Futures, and the food pantry both in New London, CT.

Barbara is survived by her children Diane Blackwell and her spouse Kim Hale of Old Lyme, Dennis Z. Blackwell and his spouse Margie, Elmer C. As everyday passes it seems we lose another of those we hold dear. Forever gone , but not forgotten! We hold dear all the many good times shared though the years.
I will always be grateful for all the memories filled with joy and especially laughter Barbara brought to my life. I can only imagine that heaven will not be the same once she arrives. RIP Much love 💕

When I was the Director of the Lymes’ Senior, that’s where I met the most welcoming person, Barbara Blackwell, also introduced as “The Old Bat! Lol
I will always remember when she came back from getting her hair done. I called it “The Duck” hairdo. Her hair looked just like a duck from the back. Gorgeous!!
She was always ready to help me and others with a smiling face!! She will be dearly missed! Fly high like a “Bat” my dear friend. Love you!!
