

Mr. Maranda was born May 6, 1924, in Sutton, Mass., the son of Joseph and Excina Savoy Maranda. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy July 31, 1942. He served on the USS Jallao SS-368, USS Charr SS-328, USS Clamagore SS-343, NROTC Unit Dartmouth College, and Staff Submarine School New London. During his service he received the Navy Good Conduct medal with four stars, American Campaign medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, a member of the Mighty Mine Dodgers, Navy Occupation Service medal (Asia), Submarine Combat Pin. He retired in February 1962, as Chief ETC. He worked at Viking Instruments in Moodus, Conn., Sears, New London, and then owned Russel's Meat Market in Old Lyme. He was a member of the Holland Club, Fleet Reserve-Groton, American Legion-Old Lyme, VFW-Old Lyme, US Sub Vets Inc, US Sub Vets of World War II, past-president and 25+ year member of the Lions Club in Old Lyme (Knight of the Blind and Melvin Jones Fellow). During his time in Old Lyme he served as past president of the Old Lyme Little League, was active with Cadets and Boy Scouts, and was named the 1994 citizen of the year in Old Lyme.
Mr. Maranda is survived by his wife, Helen, his two daughters, Jeanine F. Maranda of Old Lyme and Jacqueline and her husband, Allan York, of Niantic; two sons, Francis J. Jr. and his wife, Pat Maranda, of South Carolina and John and his wife, Susan Maranda, of Florida; four grandchildren, Allan S. York Jr. of Milford, Abby Hodges of California, Anne K. Maranda of Ohio, and Margaret Maranda of North Carolina; and his two great-grandchildren, Avery S. York and Callie M. York.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, in Christ the King Church in Old Lyme. Interment will be private in Mass with full military honors. Calling hours will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith Lane, Old Lyme, CT 06371.
