

Lyme- Friedrich "Fritz" Rudolf Behringer passed away on December 18 after a long illness. He was born on May 24, 1926 in Haltingen, Germany and became a US citizen in 1964. He received his medical education at the Universities of Basel, Switzerland and Heidelberg and Freiburg, Germany. He completed an internship at Welfare Island Hospital in NYC and went on to his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Allentown Hospital, Pennsylvania and Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. In 1960 he joined the staff of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Lawrence & Memorial. He passed the Obstetric and Gynecology Specialty Board Examination and became a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics Gynecology in 1976. From 1976 -1980 he served as chief of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was senior attending from 1980 until his retirement in 1994.
Fritz was a member of various hospital committees and service groups including the Aids Task Force, President of the New London unit of the American Cancer Society, and Trustee of the First Congregational Church in New London.
Fritz enjoyed hunting and maintained a small Christmas tree farm in Lyme, where he enjoyed the company of friends and acquaintances for many years. He was a frequent contributor to the day regarding medical and political issues.
After residing in Waterford for 45 years, Fritz spent the final years of his life in Lyme. He is survived by his wife, Johanna Behringer; three children, Heidi McInerney, Mark Behringer and Fred Behringer; and nine grandchildren, Anna, Catherine and Mark Robert Behringer of Rowley, MA; Andrew, Kevin and John McInerney of S. Natick, MA; and Hannah, Eric and Sarah Behringer of Old Lyme. He is also survived by his sister, Hannelore Fischer living in Haltingen, Germany.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Fritz's memory to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 135 Parkinson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10305 or the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Development Fund.
