John "Jack" Roman Salbinski, of South Lyme (formerly of Chester), passed away on February 25, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, wisdom, and a profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on October 6, 1946, in New Britain, he was the son of John and Emilie Salbinski. Jack devoted his life to education at Hale Ray High School in East Haddam, where he was more than just a history teacher - he was a mentor, a coach, and a lifelong source of encouragement. Affectionately known as “Mr. Sal” to his students, he believed that learning extended far beyond the classroom. Whether through work-study programs, coaching soccer, or sharing his passion for fishing and carpentry, he instilled in young minds the value of hard work, resilience, and a good sense of humor. His unwavering support and belief in others left an enduring mark on generations of students.
Jack’s love for life was as boundless as his generosity. He found joy in the camaraderie of his Four Mile River Marina crew, where he spent countless hours on the water, fishing and swapping stories. He cherished time with his Bill’s Seafood friends, his Point O’ Woods neighbors, and his lifelong high school buddies from New Britain, always bringing laughter and warmth wherever he went. His heart belonged to St. Martin, where he felt most at peace, basking in the Caribbean sun and embracing the simple pleasures of good company, great stories, and unforgettable moments. Jack’s presence was larger than life, his smile infectious, and his spirit truly one of a kind.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Bunny; his children, Julie Schwarzenegger and her husband Morgan of Huntersville, NC, and Christopher Salbinski and his wife Jennifer of Essex; his adored grandchildren, Sloan Schwarzenegger, Lauren Salbinski, and Andrew Salbinski; and his closest cousin, Blanche Podhajski Kreiling of Waterbury, VT. He loved them fiercely and unconditionally, always their biggest cheerleader, their strongest protector, and their guiding light.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 22nd, at 11 AM at Christ the King Church, 1 McCurdy Road, Old Lyme.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or simply honor Jack’s lifelong commitment to helping others by performing a random act of kindness in his memory.
Though he is no longer with us, Jack’s spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched – the students he inspired, the friends he uplifted, and the family he adored. We know he is watching over us, forever Mr. Sal, Captain Jack, our beloved Papa Sal.
Rest in peace, Jack. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten. To sign the online guest book visit www.fultontherouxoldlyme.com.
